Genius unveils touch-controlled speakers

June 24 - 1:00am EDT   Genius on Tuesday unveiled the SP-T1200 speaker set, a system that incorporates touch-based audio controls, while maintaining an affordable price. The 30-watt system offers a connection for headphones, and features treble, bass, and mute controls that use touch to function, rather than a physical button. Genius indicates that the speakers are quite compact, making them ideal for laptop users. The SP-T1200 speakers sell for $100, available from select retailers. [full story]

Brother, Canon printer drivers via Software Update

June 5 - 8:35pm EDT  Apple on Thursday used its Software Update to push out updated printer drivers for both Canon and Brother's line of printers. Users with the software installed were prompted for a software update called "Brother Printer Driver Update 1.1". The update was released Thursday afternoon as a 23MB download. Brother printers drivers for Mac OS X 10.5 are currently located on the original CD and the company did not specify the changes in the current driver, except to say "The Brother Printer Driver Update includes the latest drivers for printers you have used on your system." Onset unveils USB humidity, temperature monitor

April 1 - 12:15am EDT  Onset Computer Corporation today introduced the HOBO U14 LCD Data Logger, an environmental monitoring system that tracks temperature and humidity ratings in indoor environtments. The logger notifies users when environmental conditions exceed those specified, and includes both an audible alarm, as well as an auto phone dialer. Onset says the unit functions quickly over USB 2.0, and is selling the unit starting at $200. [full story]

Dell ships Ubuntu systems in Canada, Latin America

February 21 - 5:15pm EST   Dell today announced to its Canadian and Latin America customers that the Inspiron 1525n now has the option of shipping with Ubuntu Linux 7.1, as well as with the Canadian models of the XPS M1330n and Inspiron 530 – the latter two will ship throughout Latin America soon. Like the previously announced US, UK, Spanish and German models, the computers will feature DVD playback capability. Support options are available starting at $65 for 30 days, all the way to $275 for 1 year of standard support from Canonical. [full story]

DiskWarrior 4.1 offers full Leopard compatibility

January 24 - 7:20pm EST   Alsoft today unveiled DiskWarrior 4.1, an update to its disk and file repair utility, bringing Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard compatibility and support for the new operating system’s features. The new version is able to scan and repair damaged directory hard links, which are used by Time Machine backups; Alsoft claims DiskWarrior 4.1 is the only utility on the market that can repair these issues. Altec Lansing debuts T612 iPhone dock

January 7 - 10:35am EST   Altec Lansing has unveiled its T612 digital audio system for Apple's iPhone and iPod, offering users sound with iPhone incoming call support. The T612 ensures that when a call comes in while music is playing, the iPhone gives priority to the call by pausing the music. Once the call is completed, the iPhone is re-docked in the T612 and the music resumes playing at the same song and place. The T612 is priced at $200 and will ship in February. [full story]

Mac OS X a growing target amongst hackers

December 31 - 11:00am EST   Apple's Mac OS X operating system -- which the company advertises as more secure than Microsoft Windows -- is coming under increased scrutiny by security specialists and underground crackers as the platform increases in market share. After repeatedly posting record quarters and announcing a growth rate well ahead of the personal computer industry in general, Apple is fast appearing on the radar of more and more hackers across the globe. December 24 - 10:45am EST   Enhance Technology has unveiled its next generation UltraStor RS16 IP-4, a rack-mount 3U 16-drive Quad Gigabit iSCSI independent RAID storage system. The new RS16 IP-4 is the latest addition to Enhance's UltraStor RS series family with a built-in 64-bit RAID controller for mission critical applications. Key UltraStor RS16 IP-4 features include Snapshot, N-way Mirror, RAID-6 data protection, automatic background data regeneration, dynamic online volume expansion, and Multi-Path I/O support for Windows workstations & servers (pricing was unavailable). Apple updates Safari, Security updates

December 22 - 12:45am EST  Apple on Friday updated its newest security update (released earlier this week) to correct an issue that caused its Safari browser to crash on some websites. Although it didn't specify the exact nature of the problem that was introduced with the update, the company said that Security Update 2007-009 v1.1 (Tiger, Leopard) is now available for Mac OS X v10.5.1 and Mac OS X v10.4.11 and said that the update specifically addresses an issue introduced in Security Update 2007-009 that causes an unexpected termination of the Safari application when browsing to certain web sites. Apple posts MacBook (Pro) Software 1.1

December 19 - 1:45am EST  Apple has released MacBook, MacBook Pro Software Update 1.1, which it says addresses a responsiveness issue on MacBook and MacBook Pro notebook computers. According to Apple's documentation, "some MacBook and MacBook Pro systems may occasionally experience a temporary suspension of keyboard input which can last a minute or longer. The Mac OS X 10.5.1 update is required before installing the MacBook, MacBook Pro Software Update 1.1." [full story]
