Symantec confirms pursuit of split into two independent companies

Two publicly traded companies will emerge in areas of security, information management

Rumors of Symantec's possible company split look to be true, as the company announced today that a plan was voted on to break the company up. The company, which is known for its line of Norton security products, said that its board of directors unanimously approved a new plan that would create two publicly traded companies, each with their own focus.

[Updated with HP confirmation] Hewlett-Packard (HP) is said to be announcing a company split this week that would create two separate companies, based on different needs. The resulting break will create one firm that focuses on consumer-focused printers and personal computers, while the second will deal in corporate hardware and service operations.

Gefen today unveiled its new 1-to-5 HDMI 1.3 Splitter and 1-to-10 HDMI 1.3 Distribution Amplifier. The Gefen 1-to-5 Splitter for HDMI 1.3 accepts one audio/video input, such as a DVD player or set top box, and transmits the same signal to five displays. The 1-to-10 HDMI 1.3 Distribution Amplifier transmits one HDMI source to 10 displays, and both units accommodate larger distributions when 'daisy chained' with another splitter. Gefen's 1-to-5 splitter and 1-to-10 Distribution Amplifier are both rack mountable, and both are available for pre-order at $500 and $750, respectively.

Motorola examines options

Motorola today announced it is exploring the possibility of restructuring its business strategies in order to recoup its status as a top wireless equipment provider. After having recently been bumped to third behind Nokia and Samsung, Motorola is taking steps to win back marketshare, and in turn, enhance the value of its shares. One avenue the company is exploring is to divide its wireless business from the rest of its daily operations, allowing each party to concentrate fully on their various tasks.
