On Thursday, Apple updated its drivers for Canon printer, scanner and AIO products for Macs running OS X 10.7.x (Lion), Mountain Lion (10.8.x) or Mavericks (10.9.x). The updates are likely to already be included in the forthcoming 10.9.3 update, and updates every currently-available driver alongside adding new support for new models. This is the first time that no Snow Leopard version of a driver update has been available.
On Thursday, Apple refreshed its printer drivers covering Epson and Xerox printers -- likely to be the first of a fresh batch of printer and scanner driver updates -- for Macs running OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and later. Though the company is slowly winding down support for 10.6, the four-year-old OS continues to get selected security, iTunes/QuickTime and printer driver updates for the time being. Today's release both updates existing drivers and adds support for new models.
On Thursday, Apple released updated printer drivers for its supported Xerox printers for users of OS X Snow Leopard (10.6), Lion (10.7) and Mountain Lion (10.8). Unusually for such a release, there is not yet a list of the specific changed or added models supported by the built-in software. All three versions of OS X support a wide and expanding list of Xerox products, including standalone, all-in-one and wireless printer models, as well as some standalone scanners.
Apple on Tuesday updated both Java and its web browser Safari for users of OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) and higher. The updates now allow users to enable the Java web plug-in on a site-by-site basis, as opposed to the "active" or "inactive" options it had previously. Following a spate of serious issues, Apple forcibly disabled the Java plug-in because of malicious, in-use threats -- though users could reactivate Java once they updated.
On Thursday, Apple updated its set of drivers for various HP and Brother models for users of OS X from 10.6 up to the present 10.8.2. The updates, available through the Software Update mechanism or through a direct update from Apple's support pages, provides the latest drivers and bring in support for new and existing models for printers, scanners and all-in-one units from the two companies. Both require a minimum of OS X 10.6.1.
Apple has issued a handful of minor updates in the past few days, including an update to its Raw file support for a clutch of recently released cameras. The 4.02 update to Digital Camera RAW Compatibility adds file compatibility to Aperture 3.x and iPhoto '11 for the Nikon CoolPix P7700, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH3, three Sony cameras and three Olympus models. The Sony cameras added are the Alpha NEX-5R, NEX-6 and SLT-A99, while the Olympus models are the PEN E-PL5, PEN E-PM2 and Stylus XZ-2.
