Speaking at the SXSW conference, President Obama fielded some brief questions about the Silicon Valley encryption fight with lawmakers in Congress. While refusing to specifically address the Apple versus FBI matter centered around the San Bernardino shooting, the President suggests that a compromise should be reached now, warning that "what you'll find is that after something really bad happens, the politics of this will swing and it will become sloppy and rushed and it will go through Congress in ways that are dangerous and not thought through"
Last month at his year-end press conference, President Obama responded to the first question with a call for stronger cybersecurity laws. Today, the President released a statement detailing what he would like to see in legislative proposals. Some of it attempts to address concerns plaguing CISPA, which has been floundering since 2011 but is staging a comeback in the new Republican-led Congress, among other plans.
President Obama has taken the national stage in defense of the leaked PRISM and telephone surveillance programs, calling the telephony effort "authorized by broad bipartisan majorities repeatedly since 2006" with elected officials "consistently informed on exactly what we're doing." He was circumspect with remarks about Prism, telling US citizens that the effort does not apply, and also calling it fully approved, and supervised by the FISA court.
