Apple Maps, App Stores, iTunes affected by brief outage
Apple's online services endured another outage overnight, with a number of services becoming unusable for over an hour. Apple's system status page advises some users were affected by downtime for "multiple store services" and "multiple iCloud services" at around 10pm EST for just over an hour, with all users affected by a slightly briefer Maps issue for approximately half an hour at roughly the same time.
Outage affecting some users of App Store, iTunes, iBooks, Mac App Store
[updated with Apple revisionism on outage time] An outage of services has affected some users, making Apple's main iTunes-oriented stores (the iTunes store, the iOS and Mac App Stores, the iBookstore, and even the corporate Volume Purchasing Program) unavailable for the past two hours or so. According to Apple's own system status page, some percentage of users have been unable to make purchases since approximately 4:20 PM Eastern, and the outage is ongoing.
Longer disruption follows series of selected iCloud, store downtimes
Following a series of short but widespread iCloud and online storefront-related outages, Apple's Game Center has been down since early Tuesday afternoon (Pacific TIme), and as of late Tuesday has still not yet been resolved. According to the company's system status page, every area of Apple's online services saw some level of outage on Tuesday, with a morning disruption of Siri, Apple Pay, storefront, and iCloud services followed by a second disruption of the online stores in the early evening.
Worldwide issue disrupting most areas of iCloud services, slowing response time
[Update: Apple says all services now restored as of 9:30AM ET] Some of Apple's iCloud services have been suffering a global, widespread slowdown or outage, beginning around 2:30AM Eastern time and continuing into mid-Thursday morning. The problems have reached into 11 services from Apple's online cloud offering, including iCloud Drive, iCloud Keychain syncing, iCloud Mail syncing, Documents in the Cloud, iCloud Backup, Back to My Mac, Photos, Find My iPhone/iPad/iPod touch/Mac, iMovie Theater, iCloud sign-in, and the iWork for iCloud beta.
Connectivity down globally, but issue resolved by 11:30AM ET
A widespread but apparently brief outage was reported to have affected Apples online digital storefronts this morning, such as the App Store, iTunes Store and Mac App Store. The problem appeared to occur worldwide, but Apple's System Status Page did not acknowledge the issue until hours after it was resolved, which occurred at approximately 8:30AM Pacific. The company suffered a much longer and more severe outage just two weeks ago.
Facebook denies downtime caused through Lizard Squad hack
A brief one-hour outage of Facebook and Instagram last night was not caused by hackers, the social network has admitted. Refuting claims by a hacking group that it was behind the downtime, Facebook advises it was caused by an alteration on its systems that it quickly repaired, rather than interference from an outside group attacking its servers.
Compromised servers isolated and replaced, says project developers
Last Friday, the Tor Project blog posted about a possible threat that some of its servers would be seized in an attempt to incapacitate or hijack the Tor network. Over the weekend, a group of "exit node" servers in a Dutch datacenter went down, and then came back online. The service, a volunteer network of relays aiming to provide anonymity and security, says it was warned of suspicious activity that may have been instigated by law enforcement.
BGP tables hitting 512K limit, could mean more outages as capped machines surface
Since yesterday, the Internet has hit some bouts of turbulence as a widespread issue slowly works its way across infrastructure. The issues aren't tied to any sort of fiber issues or due to the exhaustion of iPv4 address, but rather the exhaustion of memory inside of some hardware such as routers and switches. Starting on Tuesday, border gateway protocol (BGP) tables, the tables responsible for keeping track of a map of the Internet, started to hit their limit in older hardware, making chunks of the Internet inaccessible in the process.
17-hour disruption delayed launch of redesigned Starbucks app
Apple developers are still fuming over a prolonged outage of the company's iTunes Connect service, which started yesterday afternoon (5PM PT) and continued on until 10AM PT on Thursday. While not all developers were affected, a cascade of Twitter messages from frustrated app creators indicated that Apple's description of "some users" being affected was a not-insignificant percentage, and for some is still an ongoing problem.
Cloud storage service distances itself from hacking reports
A service outage endured by Dropbox over the weekend was caused by human error rather than malicious intent, the company has revealed. The service issues, which affected some users for close to 48 hours, stems from a mistake made during routine maintenance work, with the company distancing itself from suggestions that the outage was caused by hackers.
Problem likely due to high demand; cause not publicly revealed
With so many people engaging in post-Christmas celebrations, there are scattered reports of service outages or other problems due to unusually high use for a weekday or because an usually large number of consumers happened to call upon a service at the same time. Netflix on Thursday saw an issue that caused its service to be unavailable for a little over an hour or so, interrupting evening viewing plans for many but quickly resolved.
Profile outage follows similar incident on October 21st
A large number of Facebook users have reported that profiles and pages on the service had a few hours of downtime earlier today. The issue, affecting profiles from approximately 10:30am Eastern Standard Time until 1pm, prevented page content from loading, and instead showed the error "Sorry, but this page didn't load properly. Please try again."
Apple Online Store down for scheduled maintenance until 4AM ET
The online store from Apple has been listed on the company's System Status page as down for planned maintenance from approximately midnight Wednesday (eastern time) to 4AM ET. The downtime occurred just after a three-hour partial iCloud.com outage in which users could access most services, but the web Calendar and Reminders applications were nonfunctional. Most iCloud disruptions are brief and only affect a small portion of users, but both of the recent downtimes affected all users.
Microsoft Tag going dark in August 2015, Scanbuy providing support
Microsoft will be shuttering its QR code competitor in the next few years, according to e-mails sent to customers. The Microsoft Tag service, which allows companies to embed data into an image for scanning by a smartphone application, will end on August 19th, 2015, reports Engadget. Despite its impending demise, the format will still operate via QR code service Scanbuy, which will start to support aspects of Microsoft Tag from September this year.
Exchange ActiveSync issue flooded servers, system changes made
Microsoft has issued an apology for the three-day outage of Outlook.com and other online services, at the same time as explaining what caused the issue in the first place. A caching service that works with devices using Exchange ActiveSync caused the outage, with its failure and subsequent flood of traffic stopping access to Outlook, SkyDrive, and contacts list for some users.
Global outage affecting limited number of Outlook, SkyDrive users
A number of online services operated by Microsoft are not currently operating normally, according to reports. The company's Outlook, People, and the SkyDrive cloud storage service are suffering from an outage, preventing users from being able to see e-mails, make changes to contacts, nor to access their files stored online.
All issues now cleared, but service interruptions a hassle for many
Apple has reported some brief but widespread slowdowns and unavailability of Game Center -- starting in the wee hours of Thursday and again later that morning -- coupled with a prolonged mail issue that only affected a fraction of one percent of users on iCloud.com for half a day over Thursday and Friday. The disruption comes on the heels of scattered reports of brief iTunes Store outages and a more serious iMessage and FaceTime problem ten days ago, the latter of which lasted over five hours. All services are back to normal operation now.
Storms in North Virginia takes out Amazon data center
Netflix, Instagram, and other web services were hit by an Amazon Web Services outage. Historic thunderstorms in Northern Virginia caused power outages for Amazon data center in the region, forcing services depending on EC2 from it to be severely affected, with Netflix in particular suffering considerable amounts of downtime.
Problems quickly addressed
Amazon appears to have resolved an outage that affected the company's EC2 operations based in Northern Virginia. The problems reportedly brought down services from a wide range of websites, including Foursquare, Instagram, Netflix, Reddit and Quora, among others. The problems were isolated to the EC2 East-1 location, rather than both of Amazon's EC2 datacenters in the US.
Sony initiates unannounced security fix
Sony briefly took down the PlayStation Network late Tuesday afternoon in a surprise move. The unannounced shutdown caught users off-guard forcing them to install an additional security fix. Gamers who tried to access their network accounts were greeted with this error message: “An error has occurred. You have been signed out of PlayStation Network. (80710016). Please wait." Following the outage, Sony posted a message on its support pages that tells users that to regain access, they will need to install a new firmware update and create a new password.
Sony's Kaz Hirai fronts the media, makes promises
Sony VP Kaz Hirai, has fronted the world’s media in an attempt to stem the negative publicity the company is facing in the wake of the PSN hacking outage. While shedding little new light on the nature of the attack, Hirai explained that the company has involved the FBI in investigating what it referred to as a “criminal cyber-attack on the company’s data-center located in San Diego.” Hirai also promised that Sony would be bringing its services back online in a “phased restoration” starting this week and it that would also involve the company moving its servers out of San Diego to an undisclosed location.
HTC Thunderbolt users also lose 3G
Verizon's 4G LTE network suffered a nationwide outage late last night, affecting over 500,000 Verizon customers. The service disruption also caused HTC Thunderbolt users to lose access to the Verizon 3G network. A Verizon spokesman tweeted earlier today that their engineers are aware of the problem and working on a solution.
MobileMe mail out
Reports are coming in from MobileMe users who cannot access email. Two MacNN writers said their mail stopped working Monday afternoon. A check of MobileMe webmail revealed a message reading: "Your MobileMe mail is currently unavailable." Apple's MobileMe status page, however, said all MobileMe functions were "operational." Even the special status blog set up amid Mobile Me's rocky launch has not been updated in nearly two weeks. Other users are reporting similar problems.
More MobileMe troubles
Apple's MobileMe support is continuing to have outages in its second week of service and some users are reporting serious problems with email delivery and email access. The support page for the email and personal-information cloud service has a status report currently listing one percent of users are without MobilMe Mail, but does not indicate when the service will return for the affected users; other services are listed as available. The page has also announced that scheduled maintenance from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. tonight may result in MobileMe services going offline again.
EDGE outage, iPhone GO
An EDGE network outage that seems to be based around pre-paid AT&T iPhone GO clients is on its fifth day today, leaving many without mobile internet access. According to Scott Kleinberg of iPhone, Therefore I Blog, users have been experiencing intermittent success surrounded by failure to access the EDGE network. Several have reported switching to the billed service and are back on the network. AT&T has not officially commented on the matter, other than to say they are working on a solution to the problem.
BlackBerry devices on Monday saw a major service outage over the US and Canada, that spread across all service providers. According to Yahoo News, RIM did not comment on the outage, which Yahoo says is predictable behavior, based on a similar incident from April of last year. In the past, RIM has remained quiet on service outages for quite some time, then finally providing a cryptic answer. It is unknown how many users were affected during the outage; some users were able to access their device later that afternoon.
Italian iPhone, US EDGE
Telecom Italia Mobile is the leading candidate for the Italian iPhone carrier, according to extrapolations based on evidence in the iPhone software package, while a vast EDGE network outage is affecting a significant portion of iPhone users in the US. Italian news site Macity has pointed out that the TIM_Italy.bundle introduced in the v1.1.2 iPhone updater is still there in the current v1.1.3. In firmware v1.1.1, Apple had introduced Italian as an operable language.
