LG has launched a new large-screen smartphone in a similar vein to the flagship G2 in South Korea. The LG Gx has a larger 5.5-inch IPS display with a 1920x1080 resolution, packed into a casing measuring 9.2mm thick and weighing in at 167 grams, though its internals appear to be taken from the LG Optimus G Pro rather than mimicking the G2.
LG has reported its second quarter results for 2013 returning a net profit of $139 million, almost in line with its results for the same period last year. A bright note for the company was it set a record for smartphone sales, shipping 12.1 million units worldwide. The company has started to make its mark in the Android space dominated by archrival Samsung with phones like the Optimus G, G Pro and Nexus 4 all boosting the company’s brand profile.
LG has realigned its branding ahead of the launch of its Optimus G successor in August. The new flagship handset will simply be called the LG ‘G2, ’ in a move that may upset Samsung, which uses the ‘Galaxy’ branding for its devices. Its 4:3 ratio phablet devices will also drop the ‘Optimus’ branding and will be known as the ‘Vu’ series moving forward. However LG has said that it will retain the Optimus branding for certain devices, including its popular low-end smartphones, the F- and L-series handsets.
LG could be formally revealing its follow-up to the Optimus G early next month. Invitations sent out for an event in New York on August 7th from the manufacturer reads "Great 2 Have You!," with the larger size of the letter G and number 2 hinting at it being the rumored LG G2, a handset that has appeared a few times in the last few weeks.
More specifications for the rumored LG G2 have surfaced, suggesting it to have a 5.2-inch Full HD display and 3GB of RAM, as well as a 13-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization. The suggested details for the update to the Optimus G line of smartphones is accompanied by an image giving a clear view of the front of the device.
The successor to the LG Optimus G may have controls on the back of the smartphone, according to some leaked images. Photographs allegedly showing a promotional video for the "LG G2" demonstrate a pair of buttons located just below the camera, which could possibly be used as a volume control or a way to adjust the camera's zoom function.
LG will be using the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor in a future replacement for the manufacturer's Optimus G series of smartphones. The change in processor is an upgrade from the earlier Snapdragon chips used in earlier Optimus G devices, with LG claiming it to have "up to 75-percent better performance" than the Snapdragon S4 Pro.
A version of the LG Optimus G with features borrowed from the Optimus G Pro is heading to Korea. The Optimus GK has a five-inch 1080p Full HD IPS display with a pixel density of 440ppi, and though it has a smaller screen than its Pro equivalent, it keeps most of the internal specifications the same, just as the Optimus G Pro released specifically for Japan.
LG is planning to create an updated version of the Optimus G smartphone, something that could launch by the third quarter of this year. The device will apparently have a screen that is closer to five inches in size, smaller than the 5.5-inches used by the Optimus G Pro, and is set to be a globally-released handset.
LG has celebrated its Optimus G Pro 5.5-inch ‘phablet’ crossing the 500,000 sales mark in its home market of South Korea. The company has achieved the milestone in just 40 days, which is a record for any handset made by the company. Until now, LG has played second-fiddle to arch rival Samsung in the smartphone space, however its latest line Optimus G smartphones along with its Nexus 4 has helped to increase its profile while also garnering positive reviews.
