Investment analysis firm Canalys has reported that iPhone sales in India are up 56 percent year-over-year from the start of 2015, stealing share from Samsung in the segment of smartphones over $300. Apple CEO Tim Cook has lately been talking up the country, where half of the population is 25 years old or younger and increasingly affluent -- a segment Apple has traditionally appealed to. According to the report from Mobility Analyst Wilmer Ang, Apple has surged from 11 percent marketshare in India in calendar Q1 of 2015 to 29 percent in Q1 2016, dropping Samsung from 66 percent of the market to 41 percent.
Even though Apple is facing a much tougher year for iPhone sales growth than the year prior, it has not stopped the Cupertino juggernaut from seeing a huge jump in US marketshare year-over-year in the company's fiscal second quarter, even though the company's share dipped slightly from the previous quarter. Compared to a year ago, Apple went from 28 percent of US smartphone activations to 40 percent of them in the present March quarter. Rival Samsung, by contrast, held steady at 37 percent year-over-year.
The annual refresh cycle that this year introduced the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, along with the enterprise-oriented iPad Pro, has given Apple's gently-falling enterprise marketshare a boost ahead of the holiday buying season, with the iOS platform accounting for 66 percent of enterprise device activations in the quarter ending September 30 -- a rise of two percent from the quarter before, according to new statistics from BlackBerry's Good division (formerly Good Technology).
As with recent quarters, Apple is continuing to erode the marketshare of Android in the US, according to new figures from ComScore. The iPhone moved up to 44.1 percent marketshare for the period ending in August -- a 0.6 percent gain prior to the latest iPhones being introduced, which came at the end of the quarter. The gain came entirely from drops in combined Android sales (down 0.4 percent) combined with smaller drops in share from Microsoft and BlackBerry (0.1 percent each).
One day after Apple CEO Tim Cook debunked reports that sales of the Apple Watch were slipping by saying in a conference call with analysts that in fact, June sales had outperformed both May and April -- including the original rush of pre-orders, new data from Strategy Analytics claims that not only has Apple handily stolen the crown of top smartwatch seller from Samsung in just its first full quarter, the company has outsold all rivals combined year-to-date.
The latest estimates for retail sales and marketshare from industry analyst firm IDC claim that Mac sales have risen significantly, even in the face of an overall and deepening industry slump in traditional notebook and desktop PCs. For the June quarter that ended at the end of last month, IDC estimates that Mac shipments were up 16.1 percent worldwide from the year-ago quarter while the PC market generally saw an 11.8 percent contraction year-over-year. Apple was the only major computer maker to show a gain in the report.
Led by gains in the US market both for its Mac computers and its iPhone 6 lineup, Apple continued to gain share where rivals lost it in the latest reports from both Gartner and ComScore. Although Apple actually lost a tenth of a percent in marketshare in smartphones in the US from last quarter, chief rival Samsung dropped ten times more, falling 1.1 percent on weaker demand. Apple now has 12 percent marketshare in the US, a nine percent gain year-over-year.
Apple has showcased 16 apps specifically designed for autistic persons in the Education section of the iOS App Store. Two apps in particular, Proloquo2Go and Proloquo4Text, are being offered at an unusual sale price of $110 and $120 respectively, half off their normal cost due to the promotion. MacNN reviewed Proloquo2Go a little over a year ago, finding it be the best in class. Other apps spotlighted help users with math, clothing choices, environment comfort, and more.
Research firm IDC has reported that the established order of dominance in the Chinese smartphone market has crumbled, with Apple's iPhone 6 lineup pushing the Cupertino manufacturer into second place in the market, a doubling of its position from 2013. Low-cost Chinese maker Xiaomi took first place with just slightly better performance than Apple, while Samsung -- previously the unchallenged top seller -- fell to fifth place in marketshare.
According to the latest statistics from ComScore MobilLens and Mobile Metrix, Android remains the most widely-used mobile OS in the US -- but has stagnated in terms of growth, while Apple iOS devices slowly climb. As of the end of May, iOS accounted for 41.9 percent share of US smartphone users, a gain of 0.6 points from the month before. Android overall remained steady at 52.1 percent marketshare, but Apple continued to be the top individual manufacturer.

Cirrus creates Lightning-headphone dev kit
Apple supplier Cirrus Logic has introduced a MFi-compliant new development kit for companies interested in using Cirrus' chips to create Lightning-based headphones, which -- regardless of whether rumors about Apple dropping the analog headphone jack in its iPhone this fall -- can offer advantages to music-loving iOS device users. The kit mentions some of the advantages of an all-digital headset or headphone connector, including higher-bitrate support, a more customizable experience, and support for power and data transfer into headphone hardware. Apple Store app offers Procreate Pocket
The Apple Store app for iPhone, which periodically rewards users with free app gifts, is now offering the iPhone "Pocket" version of drawing app Procreate for those who have the free Apple Store app until July 28. Users who have redeemed the offer by navigating to the "Stores" tab of the app and swiping past the "iPhone Upgrade Program" banner to the "Procreate" banner have noted that only the limited Pocket (iPhone) version of the app is available free, even if the Apple Store app is installed and the offer redeemed on an iPad. Porsche adds CarPlay to 2017 Panamera
Porsche has added a fifth model of vehicle to its CarPlay-supported lineup, announcing that the 2017 Panamera -- which will arrive in the US in January -- will include Apple's infotainment technology, and be seen on a giant 12.3-inch touchscreen as part of an all-new Porsche Communication Management system. The luxury sedan starts at $99,900 for the 4S model, and scales up to the Panamera Turbo, which sells for $146,900. Other vehicles that currently support CarPlay include the 2016 911 and the 2017 models of Macan, 718 Boxster, and 718 Cayman. Apple employees testing wheelchair features
New features included in the forthcoming watchOS 3 are being tested by Apple retail store employees, including a new activity-tracking feature that has been designed with wheelchair users in mind. The move is slightly unusual in that, while retail employees have previously been used to test pre-release versions of OS X and iOS, this marks the first time they've been included in the otherwise developer-only watchOS betas. SanDisk reveals two 256GB microSDXC cards
SanDisk has introduced two 256GB microSDXC cards. Arriving in August for $150, the Ultra microSDXC UHS-I Premium Edition card offers transfer speeds of up to 95MB/s for reading data. Apple's third-quarter results due July 26
Apple has advised it will be issuing its third-quarter results on July 26, with a conference call to answer investor and analyst queries about the earnings set to take place later that day. The stream of the call will go live at 2pm PT (5pm ET) via Apple's investor site, with the results themselves expected to be released roughly 30 minutes before the call commences. Twitter stickers slowly roll out to users
Twitter has introduced "stickers," allowing users to add extra graphical elements to their photos before uploading them to the micro-blogging service. A library of hundreds of accessories, props, and emoji will be available to use as stickers, which can be resized, rotated, and placed anywhere on the photograph. Images with stickers will also become searchable with viewers able to select a sticker to see how others use the same graphic in their own posts.
