Rumors are circulating that Microsoft is planning a major refresh of its hardware offerings in October, ahead of the Christmas season. Expected at the show is a revision to the Surface Pro lineup with Intel's Skylake processor in part to utilize Windows Hello biometric login, Lumia 950 and 950XL handsets already widely leaked, and some discussion of a smaller Xbox One console -- although rumors of the latter seem especially poorly validated, with little to confirm the release.
Microsoft may be working on a pair of high-specification Lumia smartphones meant to showcase the upcoming Windows 10 operating system. Details relating to two upcoming smartphones have apparently leaked, with a report claiming one device codenamed "Cityman" has a 5.7-inch QHD display, while the "Talkman" will have the same resolution but use a smaller 5.2-inch screen.
Microsoft has unveiled a Windows-based smartphone that seems to be a slightly improved version of the recent Lumia 640 for emerging markets. The new Lumia 540 Dual SIM shares much of its specifications with last month's smartphone launch, but it does include a few useful changes, such as a higher-resolution front-facing camera and, as the name suggests, the ability to use two SIM cards.
Microsoft is making the technical preview of Windows 10 for smartphones available to more devices, the software giant has advised. Initially available to a small number of Lumia smartphones, the technical preview will be installable on a wider array of hardware, with over 30 Lumia devices on a preliminary list set to receive the software in the next preview release.
Microsoft has introduced what it calls its "most affordable Lumia" smartphone, priced at $70. The Lumia 430 Dual SIM leans towards the entry-level end of the smartphone spectrum, though despite the price, it manages to pack a 4-inch 800x480 display and runs Windows Phone 8.1 with Lumia Denim, and it will be able to use Windows 10 when it is released.
Microsoft has added two more mid-ranged devices to its Lumia device roster. The Lumia 640 has a five-inch 720p ClearBlack IPS display, with the Lumia 640 XL boasting a similar-resolution 5.7-inch display, and though they both have similar core specifications and share the same name, the XL version has a few more extra changes.
Microsoft is still working on allowing owners of lower-specification Windows Phone devices to use Windows 10. Concerns that owners of smartphones including the Lumia 520 would miss out were allayed by a Microsoft executive, though it appears that they may miss out on some of the functionality expected to arrive within the mobile operating system.
Sprint has started to sell the Nokia-branded Lumia 635, the first on the network running Windows Phone 8.1. Equipped with a Snapdragon 1.2GHz quad-core processor accompanied by 512MB of RAM, a rear 5-megapixel camera, and a 4.5-inch 480x854 display, the Lumia 635 is being sold on Sprint for $7 per month over 24 months under Easy Pay, or a full price of $168.
Microsoft has unveiled two Lumia smartphones destined for emerging markets. The Lumia 435 is claimed to be the company's "most affordable Lumia," complete with a four-inch 800x480 LCD screen, while the Lumia 532 is slightly more expensive -- and while it packs the same display, it switches out the 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor for a quad-core version.
Leaked photographs claimed to show a prototype Lumia smartphone may depict a previously-rumored device said to have Kinect-style gesture controls and a high-resolution PureView camera. The images, showing a device marked as a prototype from Microsoft Mobile, may in fact be a smartphone codenamed "McLaren" and may show what could have been the successor to the Lumia 1020.
