Apple's e-reader is under-appreciated
Anyone who bought the Kindle device that lets you read in direct sunlight made a sensible choice, and they got terrific battery life too. I made my iPad choice, and I lived with it, despite not being able to read on the sun-soaked beach. Of course, you can read Kindle books on iPad, but now I actively seek out titles on Apple's iBook Store before I bother looking for them on Kindle.
Smartphone-mounted light sensor can receive data from lamps
A method for sending data using light was shown at CES by a company called Oledcomm, a system it called LiFi. Demonstrated on the show floor using an Android smartphone with its front camera replaced with a light sensor, the system allows for devices to communicate using pulses of light, with the rapidity of flashes making the light source look as if it is a static light.
Hue BR30 offers 630 lumens of light, larger size
Philips has added to its range of app-controlled light bulbs by introducing two new intelligent light sources. The Hue BR30 Downlights are designed to be used as spotlights and to highlight individual features, while a partnership with Disney has led to the StoryLight, which alters ambient lighting when used with a corresponding ebook app.
Fipel bulbs could be produced within the next year
US researchers have claimed to create a new light bulb made of plastic to replace the relatively new LED bulbs. Designed to replace fluorescent bulbs seen in large-scale lighting systems such as within office complexes, the new bulbs use multiple layers of plastic to generate a flicker-free light that is more "natural" than the blue-tinted fluorescent bulbs, potentially saving users from light-induced headaches.
iPhone DMX light control
SyntheFX has released a handy iPhone app for A/V and theater professionals. Luminair 1.0 allows remote control of intelligent DMX512-A lighting systems via the iPhone. DMX is a widely-used standard for digital control of stage lighting, special effects and fog machines. Luminair uses Artistic Licence's Art-Net protocol through a Wi-Fi connection to interface with DMX devices. The app includes an on-screen "mixer," channel layout interface and data analyzer.
LightWork Design has taken the wraps of what it says is a "game-changing" rendering solution for developers of 3D design software. The company claims LightWorks SE has the “easiest to use toolkit ever,” and includes pre-configured content settings to simplify complex rendering projects. LightWork says it uses an industry-based approach so the product can be tailored to individual customers.
Energizer iPod battery
Energizer today unveiled a new iPod battery extender, as well as several new lighting products; it will be demonstrating them at CES 2008. The Energi To Go for iPod uses two AA batteries, and when used with the company’s e2 Lithium cells, produces over 40 hours of audio playback, or 11 hours of video. The unit unfolds, revealing a dock connector, allowing the iPod to sit in the lightweight battery pack. Energi To Go for iPod comes with two Energizer e2 Lithium AA batteries, while pricing and availability has not been mentioned.
