Microsoft loses SkyDrive trademark suit to BSkyB in Europe

Compensation, possible rebranding could be ordered by judge

Microsoft has lost a trademark case in the United Kingdom over the branding of its cloud storage service. The ruling, which covers both the UK itself and the European Union, states that Microsoft infringed on British Sky Broadcasting's trademark of the Sky brand with SkyDrive, which could impact the way that the software company offers it across the continent.


Amazon requests dismissal of Apple 'app store' suit

Citing trade confusion, Apple demands Amazon use different name

Amazon is requesting a federal judge in Oakland, California to dismiss Apple's false advertising claim against the retailer challenging the use of the "app store" name. The claim followed the launch of the Kindle Fire tablet and associated store called the "Amazon Appstore" instead of a similar term such as "Amazon Appstore for Android." Apple claims that the change could contribute to consumer confusion.


Samsung attorneys object to Apple labeling on court exhibits

Stickers cover back of phones, don't obscure brand labeling

Earlier today, Samsung attorneys filed a motion in the Apple versus Samsing patent trial in the District Court of the Northern District of California to "label joint exhibit devices in a manner not obscuring trade dress." Apple is the curator of the joint exhibits, most of which are Samsung-developed smartphones. The devices have large stickers affixed to the backs, labeling the devices as trial exhibits, but not obscuring any branding or device model identification.


Alliances forming to bid on Kodak patent bankruptcy sale

Apple siding with Microsoft; Google and Samsung team up

At least two major groups are expected to bid on Kodak's patent auction, said sources familiar with the matter. Microsoft, Apple, and notorious patent troll Intellectual Ventures are allegedly lining up on one side. Google is headlining a group with Samsung, HTC, LG, and non-practicing entity RPX. Sources familiar with the matter have said that discussions would continue over the weekend, with alliances changing and other bidders potentially emerging. None of the companies named in any of the alliances have commented on the matter.
