The iPhone Dev Team has detailed a very early jailbreak method for the now official iOS 5.1 update. Beta 6 of redsn0w 0.9.10 will crack all devices based on the A4 and earlier. With the exception of iPhone 3GS units with older firmware, however, the jailbreak is tethered and will need to be reused every time the device is given a hard reboot.
(Update: Windows too) The promised iPhone 4S and iPad 2 untethered jailbreak has been posted as of Friday. Absinthe lets Mac users crack iOS 5 on the modern Apple hardware to run Cydia as well as other unsigned apps. Demand is such that the main host, greenpois0n, is currently having trouble; Chronic Dev Team contributor Josh Hill warned that the jailbreak might not run at first, since it's dependent on reaching the greenpois0n site.
The iPhone Dev Team have announced that they are close to releasing the Corona A5 jailbreak for the iPhone 4S and iPad 2. The team says that it has overcome the technical hurdles associated with the underlying technique and that all that remains is bug fixes before a general release is made available. The release will work on iPhone 4Sí running iOS 5.0 (9A334), 5.0.1 (9A405) and 5.0.1 (9A406), as well as the iPad 2 running iOS 5.01 (9A405).
Apple's attempts to court iPhone hackers may have gone a step further in the past day as key iPhone Dev Team member MuscleNerd revealed that he had visited Apple. An unspecified host at Apple gave him a trip to the company's Cupertino campus. The subject of the trip wasn't mentioned, but the host was clearly aware of his role in jailbreaking iOS devices, having given him a security badge with his alias.
The iPhone Dev Team has already updated its redsn0w beta jailbreak to get around the security patch in iOS 4.3.4. Beta 3 allows a tethered jailbreak from Macs and Windows PCs for every device that can run the OS outside of the iPad 2. Team members are advising most to cling to 4.3.3 or 4.2.9 if they want to use JailbreakMe or other wireless cracks.
Apple will soon make it harder for users to revert their iPhones to older versions of the iOS operating system, the unofficial iPhone Dev Team found. iOS 5 beta reportedly has a different APTicket which will refine the way the phone boots. It will look at an authentic APTicket, which will be generated randomly at every restore function rather than ECID and firmware versions.
