Verizon unveils Jetpack hotspot with 4G LTE, new Verizon plan tier

Verizon rebrands Netgear LTE hotspot, supports up to 15 devices on Wi-Fi

Verizon has introduced a new mobile device, shortly after bringing out a new tier of service for its subscribers. The Netgear AirCard 791S Mobile Wi-Fi Hotspot is being made available under the name Verizon Jetpack 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot, while the updated service plans the carrier launched early last month is increasing from a choice of four to five, with the addition of a new top-tier plan offering more data at a higher monthly cost.

ZTE Mobley plugs into diagnostics port, turns on with vehicle

AT&T is bringing out a Wi-Fi hotspot its customers can install into their vehicles, saving passengers from having to use tethering on their mobile devices or from carrying around a separate hotspot. The ZTE Mobley is a compact device which plugs into the OBD II (on-board diagnostics) port in a car, allowing it to receive power and to automatically turn on whenever the vehicle's engine is running.

ZTE has started shipping a combined projector and hotspot in the United States. The ZTE Spro 2 Smart Projector follows on from last year's Sprint LivePro, also produced by ZTE, with the device being able to project a 720p-resolution image to a screen as large as 120 inches diagonally at 200 lumens, complete with autofocus and auto keystone correction.

Marriott and Hilton weigh in in favor, Google and Microsoft petition against

The FCC has been petitioned by Marriott and an association of hotel owners to allow the jamming of Wi-Fi hotspots, usually set up by guests, on their premises for reasons of "managing Wi-Fi networks and security." The petition is possibly in response to when Marriott International and Marriott Hotel Services was fined $600,000 by the FCC for knocking guests off their own Wi-Fi networks (provided by hot spots and tethering to cell phones), forcing them to pay for the hotel's Wi-Fi access.

Data-focused virtual carrier Karma has unveiled an upgraded version of its portable Wi-Fi hotspot. Just as it promised late last year, the Karma Go is a compact device which replaces its existing WiMax connection with one using Sprint's LTE network, a move which should provide customers with a larger coverage area to use the hotspot within.

It appears that Comcast has decided to serve advertisements to people that connect their devices to the more than 3.5 million public Wi-Fi hotspots spread throughout the United States. Ars Technica discovered that the Internet service provider (ISP) has been injecting JavaScript advertisements into websites using the Xfinity Wi-Fi services by altering the data stream when webpages are called.

Hotspot launches on Friday with LTE Advanced support

Following on from the original Unite, AT&T will be launching a new mobile hotspot later this week, one that takes advantage of the carrier's 4G LTE network. The AT&T Unite Pro offers the ability to connect up to 15 devices simultaneously to the same cellular connection, with its battery able to provide up to 16 hours of use on one charge, as well as being able to top up the battery on mobile devices using its USB port.

Karma will add Sprint LTE to service, expanding coverage to 230 cities

Pay-as-you-go mobile Wi-Fi hotspot provider Karma is adding 4G LTE connectivity to its service. Using the Sprint 4G LTE network, customers will be able to use the shareable hotspot in more than 230 US cities once it is launched in the first half of 2014, expanding from its existing WiMAX-based coverage of 80 cities. Though the current hotspot will not be compatible with LTE network, Karma will be offering "steep discounts" on the replacement LTE device when it ships.

AT&T has made an agreement with Wi-Fi hotspot network Fon to provide each others customers with overseas Wi-Fi. Customers of Fon will be able to use AT&T's 30,000-location Wi-Fi hotspot network at various stores and businesses in the United States, while AT&T customers can use Fon's international network of close to 12 million hotspots.


Sprint prepares three tri-band LTE devices for sale on Friday

Modem, two hotspots to use 800MHz, 1.9GHz, 2.5GHz spectrum bands

Sprint has announced it will be shipping its first tri-band 4G LTE devices later this week. The Netgear Zing Mobile Hotspot, the Netgear 341U USB Modem, and the the Novatel MiFi 500 will be shipping on the carrier from July 19th, with all three able to use the 1.9GHz and 2.5GHz spectrum bands, as well as the 800MHz range due to be repurposed from the now-ceased Nextel network later this year.

HTC One hinted at release on Verizon this summer with image

The HTC One is heading to Verizon in the future, according to the EVleaks Twitter account. A picture showing the silver version of the smartphone is displayed along with the "for Verizon" claim, but there is no mention of price, an expected release date, nor if there will be any other color options. The carrier has previously said it will start selling the HTC One "later this summer," but the on-screen clock in the image offers the date September 5th, which could be a potential launch date.

AT&T will be offering a second mobile hotspot with touchscreen capabilities to customers later this week. The AT&T Unite by Sierra Wireless will allow users the ability to create a ten-device Wi-Fi hotspot that uses the carrier's 4G LTE phone network, with the further option of allowing the creation of a guest network for one-time users.

HP has put an all-in-one laser printer with a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot on sale in India, effectively performing the usual task of a wireless hub. The HP Hotspot LaserJet Pro M1218nfs multi-function printer connects to a wired network via Ethernet, and can allow up to eight other devices to wirelessly connect at the same time.


Jailbreak app MyWi updated, now supporting iOS 5

Creates hotspot without carrier approval

MyWi, an unofficial app that allows jailbroken iPhones to create hotspots without carrier approval, has been updated to version 5.5, which now supports iOS 5 users. Despite the lack of an untethered jailbreak for the latest devices, the program allows users of A4, A5 and A5X based 3G or LTE iOS devices to create and manage personal hotspots, now including Bluetooth tethering for activation of the Wi-Fi hotspot. The app has been rewritten from scratch.
