Apple on Thursday clarified its guidelines on its HomeKit home automation platform and its ability to "play well with others" in terms of third-party automation products and their own connectivity platforms. The iPhone maker will allow HomeKit products to be compatible with some competing protocols such as Zigbee or Z-Wave, but there are limits to the compatibility allowed. In addition to requiring an Apple TV for outside-the-local-network remote appliance control through Siri, the unit can act as a bridge to third-party devices.
Tablet and accessory maker E Fun will be showing off several new products at CES this year. Among these will be Nexturn, a range of home automation products in kits or a-la-carte, and NextOne, a wrist-worn fitness tracker. The Nexturn line represents the company's entry into the home automation line with a variety of app-controlled products and systems. The Nextone is also meant to be the first of a new range of fitness trackers for the company.
Nest Labs is investing further into home automation market with an acquisition announced last week. Revolv, a company that makes a smart hub to tie together Internet of Things (IoT) devices, said that it was purchased by the Google-owned connected device company. As a result, the team is folded into Nest for future product development, and sales of the Revolv hub are ending.
Today, Logitech announced it is entering the home control market with new home automation product compatibility, and four new products. The new Harmony Living Home lineup gives users access to, and control of, a wide library of entertainment and home automation devices, all from one centralized control system.
Nest Labs has confirmed its range of devices are compatible with a number of major home automation systems. Revealed at CEDIA, the company advised its Learning Thermostat and Protect will work with Control4, Crestron, Remote Technologies Incorporated (RTI), and Universal Remote Control (URC) systems, with Dropcam also joining the list of companies in the Works with Nest program.

SmartThings has announced on its blog today that electronics powerhouse Samsung has acquired the home automation company. CEO Alex Hawkinson stated that SmartThings would continue operate independently under Samsung's Open Innovation Center group. TechCrunch first reported on the sale in mid-July, with sources stating a deal had been sealed for around $200 million. SmartThings didn't comment on the terms of the sale in the latest announcement.

Samsung may be looking to acquire a home automation company, in order to bolster its home automation efforts. Shortly after joining up with the Thread Group to work on a wireless networking protocol for the "Internet of Things," the electronics giant is said to be in the process of purchasing SmartThings, with the deal said to be worth around $200 million.
