Apple on Thursday clarified its guidelines on its HomeKit home automation platform and its ability to "play well with others" in terms of third-party automation products and their own connectivity platforms. The iPhone maker will allow HomeKit products to be compatible with some competing protocols such as Zigbee or Z-Wave, but there are limits to the compatibility allowed. In addition to requiring an Apple TV for outside-the-local-network remote appliance control through Siri, the unit can act as a bridge to third-party devices.
Tablet and accessory maker E Fun will be showing off several new products at CES this year. Among these will be Nexturn, a range of home automation products in kits or a-la-carte, and NextOne, a wrist-worn fitness tracker. The Nexturn line represents the company's entry into the home automation line with a variety of app-controlled products and systems. The Nextone is also meant to be the first of a new range of fitness trackers for the company.
Nest Labs is investing further into home automation market with an acquisition announced last week. The long-awaited but finally-approaching arrival of larger-screen iPhone models and Apple's probable entries into health, home automation and mobile payments have some Wall Street analysts believing Apple's oft-repeated mantra that its forthcoming product and services pipeline is the strongest the company has had in years, if not ever. In new notes to clients, both Cantor Fitzgerald and Piper Jaffray have raised targets for AAPL to new all-time highs.
SmartThings has announced on its blog today that electronics powerhouse Samsung has acquired the home automation company. Welcome to Tuesday's edition of the Crowdfunding Critic. Every Tuesday and Thursday, the staff at Electronista and MacNN take a look at a few crowdfunding requests to offer up a project that we find interesting to our readers. It's important that this isn't taken as an endorsement of the project, but rather a neat find that we think people could have an interest in. As with all crowdfunding campaigns, the ones we talk about come with risk, even if the project reaches its funding threshold. With that word of warning out of the way to encourage smart investing, this time we'll be talking about a home automation solution, the Airfy Beacon.
Home automation fans have been getting their fair share of gadgets and accessories in the last few years. Starting with light bulbs, and ramping up to larger machines like refrigerators and washing machines, the home automation market appears to be growing every day. Smaller devices are still paving the way for consumers to jump into "smart home" products, giving companies like D-Link a chance to test the waters with new offerings. One such product, the Wi-Fi Smart Plug (DSP-W215) gives consumers a small taste of remote home control and monitoring. But is it the correct entry item for users to try? Find out in our review.

Google Paris HQ raided by investigators
Google's Paris headquarters has been raided by dozens of French police. The Tuesday raid was part of an ongoing investigation into possible tax-avoidance practices, stoked by widespread dissatisfaction with the way multinationals like Google are structuring their business operations. Although trading in many countries around the globe, Google reports its international sales only in tax-friendly Ireland, similar to a practice adopted by Apple. According to French law, if it completes any of its sales contracts in France and not Ireland alone, it could be in breach of its laws. Google, for its part, denies any wrongdoing, and said that it is fully compliant with French law. http://reut.rs/1Udk2T9
