Living without the iMac

06/25, 11:00am

What happens when Apple recalls your Mac

If you've got a 27-inch iMac that you bought between December of 2012 and September of 2013, go check out whether Apple wants it back. As MacNN reported, Apple has a new replacement program running to fix hard drive problems in some unspecified number of those machines. Do it now: it doesn't matter if your warranty or AppleCare is finished but you must do it now because the program will not last. You'll need your Mac's serial number and you'll need to head to this Apple support page. We did –– and right now, our precious iMac is off on a courier's van.

Hands On: Disk Sensei 1.0 (OS X)

Fast, detailed hard disk monitoring utility

There's nothing better than checking out the state of your hard disk, and we've all spent many happy hours twiddling with a drive instead of getting on with our work. Yet those disks that we forget about will go wrong just about as certainly as they will fill up. Maybe they won't go wrong today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life. Usually that's the reason why you should have backups, and it still is, but it's now also a good reason to try out Disk Sensei. It's a quick and thorough utility that reports on the current health of your drives, as well as then taking steps to keep them running well.

Tekkeon iPhone case lineup

Tekkeon recently revealed its lineup of cases for the iPhone, including a hard case with soft tactile properties, and several soft leather units. The Hard Case with Soft Touch is made from firm, genuine leather, and uses a hard plastic face plate to provide protection for the screen. Tekkeon says that the leather wrapping provides similar protection to rubber or silicone, but does not add as much bulk to the iPhone. The Hard Case with Soft Touch for iPhone is available in five colors mint, pink, blue, black, and brown through Tekkeon's web site for $30.
