Apple is expanding the team working on HealthKit, by reportedly bringing onboard one of the earliest users of the health monitoring and research platform. Dr Rajiv Kumar, a pediatric endocrinologist for Stanford Children's Health, was among the first users of Healthkit, and helped develop a system to monitor diabetes in children using the platform while working at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, but is apparently now working for Apple.
According to a 2014 study by the Center for Disease Control, 29.1 million Americans -- 9.3 percent of the national population -- have diabetes. Particularly for those with Type 1 diabetes, keeping a close eye on blood glucose levels is key for avoiding life-threatening highs and lows. Google has announced that one of its [x] project teams is currently testing an experimental contact lens that integrates a glucose meter for diabetics. A tiny wireless chip and a miniature glucose sensor are embedded between two layers of soft lens material, generating blood-sugar readings once per second. Engineers are said to be exploring how to integrate tiny LED lights to serve as an additional indicator when glucose levels pass above or below a certain threshold.
