Data reportedly acquired from a security breach of continuous crowdfunding service Patreon has leaked online. The data, weighing in at close to 15GB, is said to consist of files from Patreon's servers acquired by hackers late last month, with the data including a 13.7-gigabyte database that includes 2.3 million email addresses and other encrypted information that may pose a security risk to the service's user base if it is decrypted.
A million-dollar Kickstarter project for an e-ink watch is highly unlikely to provide backers with a finished product, its creators has revealed. Central Standard Timing has admitted that, despite raising over $1.02 million from over 7,600 backers and working on the project for over two years, it is not expecting to complete any of its orders, and is instead looking to sell itself off or publishing its designs or, failing that, publish its designs for use by others.
A Kickstarter project aims to offer an even cheaper computing experience than the Raspberry Pi. The Chip, put on the crowdfunding site by Next Thing, is billed as the world's first $9 computer, one which promises to not only be useful for various hobbyist projects, but also trumps its rival in terms of physical size, some functionality, and the potential for portability.
Every so often, we like to bring our readers' attention to crowdfunding efforts or projects that catch our eye and might be something you'd be interested in investing in. None of these crowdsourcing projects pay us or anything like that for the attention; we pick them based on what we think are their merits, and share them with you for your consideration for no reward, just the joy of helping cool new projects get off the ground. This week, we're looking at blogging platform Typed.
Jolla has returned to crowdfunding for its tablet, offering an extra option to backers. The second appearance on IndieGoGo for the Jolla Tablet lists a new higher-capacity device with 64GB of storage, double the original's 32GB capacity, and while new backers can buy the larger-capacity tablet for $249, existing backers can pay $25 to upgrade their 32GB model to the new version.
People paying into crowdfunding campaigns may gain some protection on their funds, thanks to a new scheme being tried out for the first time. Indiegogo is testing out crowdfunding insurance, with one campaign offering the ability to get back the cost of the donated product or device if the project fails to deliver within a reasonable timeframe.
Jolla, a Finnish startup formed by ex-Nokia employees, has moved from creating a smartphone into tablets. The company is aiming to produce the Jolla Tablet, a device running its Sailfish OS, though in a process similar to the ill-fated Ubuntu Edge smartphone, Jolla is trying to cover the cost of production via crowdfunding efforts, with seemingly more success.
Electronista and MacNN's article series Crowdfunding Critic brings readers projects from sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo that the team believes are interesting or potentially useful. However, be aware that the articles aren't an endorsement of any given project. All crowdfunding campaigns come with risks, so we ask our readers to carefully research the items they are pledging to, as they are investments. In this edition, we take a look at the Mad Genius motion controller.
Welcome to Tuesday's edition of the Crowdfunding Critic. Every Tuesday and Thursday, the staff at Electronista and MacNN take a look at a few crowdfunding requests to offer up a project that we find interesting to our readers. It's important that this isn't taken as an endorsement of the project, but rather a neat find that we think people could have an interest in. As with all crowdfunding campaigns, the ones we talk about come with risk, even if the project reaches its funding threshold. With that word of warning out of the way to encourage smart investing, this time we'll be talking about a home automation solution, the Airfy Beacon.
