Colorful maps, quiz strengthen geography skills
Hoping to combat the problem of students who know more about the lay of mythical computer-generated lands than the real world outside their city, software maker Geo4Kids has launched its first product -- Countries and Capitals, a cross-platform learning atlas for Mac, Windows and Linux. The software features a quiz mode, flags, capitals and other facts about the various countries of the Earth, aided by brightly-colored maps.

Revamp offers new iOS development environment
Runtime Revolution has dropped the "Revolution" moniker from its self-described "HyperCard descended" cross-platform rapid development environment and updated it under a new name, LiveCode. The new version offers several new features and improvements, as well as the debut of an all-new deployment pack for iOS development.

Update focuses on cross-platform collaboration
Following Microsoft's announcement of Office for Mac 2011, MacNN had a chance to speak with senior MacBU officials regarding the new software and the possibility of an iPad version. SugarSync for iPhone
Sharpcast says it has released the "first ever" commercial app allowing over-the-air push synchronization with between iPhones, Macs and PC's. SugarSync stores data in the company's "secure online digital vault," (or cloud) where it can then be shared across platforms. A unique feature turns the iPhone into a remote control, allowing users to transfer files between other computers without downloading to the iPhone itself.

TeamViewer now free
German Developer TeamViewer GmbH is making the full version its flagship desktop sharing software free to non-commercial users. TeamViewer is a cross-platform appication that allows 'information sharing between two computers located anywhere in the world." The company says TeamViewer is easy to use, and supports screen and file sharing between firewalls without compromising security.

Calgoo iCal synching
Calgoo on Wednesday announced its cross-platform calendar sharing programs are now compatible with Apple's iCal application. The announcement affects Calgoo Hub, Calgoo Connect, and Calgoo Calendar, and will allow users to synchronize their iCal calendars with users of Google, Outlook, Sunbird, as well as a host of other cross-platform mail clients. Calgoo Connect and Calendar Pro annual subscriptions start at $30, with several licensing options available.
