Motorola Cliq 2 gets Android 2.3 a year later
Motorola Cliq 2 users who may have been holding out for an update to Google’s Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) OS are on the verge of getting their long awaited update from Android 2.2 (Froyo). First released in late 2010, Gingerbread has since been superseded by Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). Nonetheless, Motorola has announced that it is recruiting 1000 customers to try its latest Motoblur-inspired Gingerbread variant before a final release is issued to all remaining Cliq 2 users.
Android malware, RootSmart, infecting phones
A new piece of Android malware is afflicting thousands of users. North Carolina State University professor Xuxian Jiang, who documented the nature and behavior of RootSmart last week, believes that between 10,000 to 30,000 user devices are connecting to a botnet without their knowledge everyday. Most of the affected users thus far are located in China and have installed the GingerBreak root access tool for Android 2.3 (Gingerbread).
Energy Sistem launches trio of Android 2.3 tabs
Energy Sistem has launched a low-cost tablet range for the budget conscious. Although only running Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), the devices give the appearance of running Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) thanks to a skin that the company has custom developed for the trio. To of the three tablets, the i828 HD and the i824, use 8-inch displays with the HD model high-res. The i724 uses a 7-inch display.
LG Optimus 3D gets long awaited update
LG Optimus 3D owners are finally going to receive an update from Android 2.2 (Froyo) to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) by the end of November, around the same time as Android 4.0 is expected to officially land. The update brings with it the usual suite of improvements that come with the upgrade, as well as some Optimus 3D extras. A leaked build that recently leaked shows that the update is based on Android 2.3.5.
CyanogenMod releases Alpha 1 for TouchPad
The CyanogenMod 7.1.0 for HP’s defunct webOS TouchPad has been made available for download and given a video preview (embedded below). The project is aiming to get a usable version of Google’s Android 2.3 running effectively, with support built-in to run multiple operating systems. The team has called the Alpha 1 release its “Lower your expectations” edition, which is designed to indicate that it is still very much a work in progress.
Budget tablet has 1GHz processor
ViewSonic has announced its first ten inch Android-only tablet, the ViewPad 10e. The Viewpad 10e has a 9.7in. IPS LCD display with 1024x768 resolution. Like its smaller sibling the ViewPad 7e, the Viewpad 10e uses a 1GHz, single-core Cortex A8 processor, 512MB of RAM, and 4GB onboard storage expandable to 36GB with an SD card. It will use the Android 2.3 and ViewSonic's proprietary 3D interface.
Android Slider carries $300 price tag
The new Samsung Transform Ultra has arrived at Boost Mobile. The slider handset had been previously
announced by the prepaid carrier last month. The phone will serve as the flagship for Boost's Android phone lineup.
HTC Thunderbolt gets long awaited update
Nine months since Google first posted the source code for Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), HTC Thunderbolt users are now beginning to enjoy a tailored version of the operating system upgrade for their handsets. The Android 2.3.4 update is now rolling out over Verizon’s network, bringing all the feature enhancements that come with it.
