Prototype in testing claimed to use screen which covers sides of smartphone

Samsung is testing a prototype smartphone with a wraparound display, according to a report. The previously-rumored smartphone is said to employ a display panel that stretches over from the front onto the two sides of the device, effectively treating the edge displays as a software-defined interface instead of the typical volume and power buttons used by current devices.

New Galaxy phones could use Youm technology

One of Samsung's high-end Galaxy devices may very well feature the company's Youm screen technology, which would allow the display to wrap around the sides of the handset. Sources familiar with the company's plans tell Bloomberg that either the successor to Samsung's Galaxy S4 or its Galaxy Note 3 may feature the three-sided display technology, but Samsung may also introduce another premium handset featuring the technology. The technology could prove to be a means of advancing the feature set of high-end smartphones, a product segment believed by some to have largely matured over the last 18 months.

Curved displays to be followed by bendable, foldable versions

Samsung is planning to bring out devices with foldable displays sometime in 2015, according to announcements made at the Samsung Analyst Day in Korea. Buoyed by the launch of the curved Galaxy Round smartphone, Samsung will look towards building bendable displays sometime in 2014, before moving to foldable versions towards the end of the following year.

Microsoft demos Youm-based Windows Phone prototype

Today Samsung unveiled a new flexible OLED technology, dubbed Youm, during a second-day keynote at CES. To demonstrate the technology the company brought in Microsoft, which showed off a prototype Windows Phone device. Microsoft also presented video from a lab test, in which a display was projected onto an entire room for the sake of an Xbox game.

Samsung Youm to define next-gen screens

Samsung has quietly given a name to its flexible AMOLED technology in a sign it's getting closer to a real launch. Now called Youm, it makes the thin film transistor and the encapsulation entirely out of film instead of glass. The changes not only let it bend and fold freely but, according to Samsung, make it "unbreakable," thinner, and lighter.
