IFA: Panasonic displays Toughpad FZ-E1 and X1 rugged tablets

Similar Panasonic hardware runs Windows 8.1 or Android

Panasonic today launched what it says is one of the world's most rugged five-inch handheld tablets with data and voice capabilities at the IFA electronics show in Berlin, Germany. The Toughpad FZ-E1 with Windows Embedded 8.1 Handheld and FZ-X1 with Android share the same ruggedized hardware, and are aimed at mobile workers in transportation and logistics, public sector and emergency services, utilities, retail, manufacturing and aviation.


Mediaroom may get Silverlight, tie into Media Center

Mediaroom IPTV may bring Silverlight and WMC hooks

Microsoft's Mediaroom IPTV backbone might get a major boost soon if leaks prove accurate. One project, codenamed Taos, would give it direct support for the Silverlight plugin and play web-based TV on DVRs without needing special support. While few details were available, ZDNet reiterated that it might be part of a wider strategy for web video in the living room, since Microsoft is already porting Silverlight to the Xbox 360 and has been working on support for system-on-a-chip hardware needed for set-top boxes.

CES 2011 used to demo new tech

Reycom, a Swiss-based tech company has used CES 2011 to debut its upcoming Windows Media Center ‘REC 7’ set-top-box that can be controlled by Windows Phone 7 mobile phones. The new Windows Media Center STB is running Windows Embedded Standard, a less system resource hungry version of Windows 7. The Reycom STB also incorporates a TV tuner, Internet connectivity and a built-in Blu-ray player, the functions of which can be remote controlled by a WP7 phone.

Microsoft allegedly making media hubs at CES

Microsoft may to compete with Apple and Google in the TV media hub front at CES if a claim this evening is accurate. The hardware would ship with a custom version of Windows Embedded with Windows Media Center on top. The results were already reported by the Seattle Times as seen in April and once again in September, but would now be polished products.


HP casts doubt on future of Windows 7 slate

HP hints Windows slate obsolete

HP at the Untethered conference today gave reason to believe it's reconsidering its release of the Windows 7 slate. The company's Personal Systems Group CTO Phil McKinney said that using an existing OS for a new design like a tablet is frequently negative but simultaneously talked up the virtues of webOS. Despite the Windows slate being the primary focus of the company's tablet efforts, no mention was made during the presentation.
