Apple recruits with VoLTE-friendly IMS in mind

Multiple job listings at Apple this week have hinted that Apple is getting ready to support Voice over LTE, or VoLTE. Telephony software engineer positions ask for experience with IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), the foundation for VoLTE's purely Internet-based calling. They're also asked to know related technology, such as the common VoIP protocol SIP as well as real-time transport (RTP).

Commitment to VoLTE still there, but timing slips

MetroPCS will be adding Voice over LTE (VoLTE) services during the second half of this year. The flat-rate wireless provider's CEO, Roger Linquist, revealed this during his quarterly analyst conference call to discuss the company's most recent financial results. He indicated that the company plans on offering at least one phone capable of supporting VoLTE.

Verizon may push VoLTE service back to early 2013

Verizon may roll out Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) in early 2013. Citing industry sources, Light Reading Mobile claims that Verizon’s VoLTE service will go live nationwide next year and that it has been successfully trialing an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS)-based app in two markets. Verizon had originally hoped to launch the service in 2012, although if it begins its roll out before the end of the year, it may be in limited markets.

LG Revolution confirmed as first VoLTE phone

Verizon's LG Revolution should be the first phone in the US to support Voice over LTE (VoLTE), the carrier's ecosystem development executive lead Brian Higgins said Tuesday. The device will be part of a larger rollout for voice on 4G across the network due to start in earnest in mid-year. The feature will let any compatible smartphone not only use VoIP as though it were regular cellular service but will be the first wide-scale instance in which Verizon users can call and use data at the same time.
