Vimeo will begin to roll out a newly redesigned website that will put more focus on the videos themselves. Performance and an optimized user interface are also priorities, with the latest programming languages used to build it. The more specific changes include a full-size player that's twice as wide as the old one, more privacy options, and additional ways to share and discover content.

The home-made video music sharing service, Vimeo, will begin offering music through its Vimeo Music Store. Unlike iTunes or other music stores, however, the music store will allow licensing songs for non-commercial and limited commercial use. The service will be powered by Audiosocket's Music-as-a-Service (MaaS) platform.

Nielsen shows price wins in mobile video app war

Most people using video apps are concerned more about how much it costs than what it contains, Nielsen said on Monday. A disproportionately large 63 percent of those using apps on iPhones, iPads, Android and elsewhere considered the price "very important" and wanted it either free or with a low subscription. Only 42 to 47 percent were sincerely concerned about what and how much video there was.

Apple slipped out a new Apple TV update on Monday with a pair of major updates. The new upgrade lets users buy and stream TV shows directly from the media hub, even including those they had already bought through iTunes. Apple TV owners previously had to rent TV shows and were limited to just ABC and Fox shows as a result.

Vimeo has launched a new interface, dubbed "couch mode," that is optimized for Google TV or any other devices that take advantage of televisions or other large displays watched at a distance. The new option still allows users to like clips, add content to a Watch Later playlist, and access information about videos or other users.

Vimeo supports HTML5 embeds and Roku channel

Vimeo today gave owners of iPads, iPhones and future Android devices the option of viewing most of its video in an HTML5 embedded player. The new approach automatically switches between Flash and HTML5 and will automatically switch to the appropriate format depending on the device and software. Apple devices will usually play in H.264 where supporting versions of Android and other platforms could play the plugin-free clips in WebM.

Apple fired a shot at Adobe on Thursday by posting a list of iPad ready sites. All of the pages support HTML5 for video when seen on the iPad and either show a special site without Adobe Flash or have already dropped Flash in favor of the plugin-free option. In addition to known sites like Vimeo and Virgin America, it also confirms that CNN, Flickr, the New York Times and several other major sites have made the switch.

Google buys On2 to boost YouTube quality

Google on Wednesday morning said it would buy On2 Technologies in a $106.5 million deal that could improve the quality of YouTube videos. The acquisition gives Google access to On2's video compression methods and is expected to directly translate into one or more of Google's video websites, most likely involving YouTube but potentially Google Video as well. While the search engine giant says it can't talk about product plans, it claims to be "committed to innovation" in video quality on the web.

YouTube boosting video quality for iPhone?

Google's primary video site YouTube is quietly increasing the quality of its videos, viewers have found over the weekend. The Flash-based site has begun re-encoding the web versions of its videos when possible, increasing their resolution from 320x240 to 480x360. Audio quality has also improved to include stereo AAC audio versus the lower bitrate mono sound of before, users note. The improvement primarily applies to newly uploaded videos, which are automatically produced in both the regular and high-quality versions, but is also being applied to older videos. The extra quality currently remains optional and must be activated by adding a tag to the address of the improved videos.
