Developer able to stream video, photographs directly from phone to Chromecast
The Google Chromecast will be receiving more support in the future, with reports of Redbox, Vimeo, and HBO preparing to take advantage of the device. The possible new additions come at the same time as a developer shows off a way for smartphones to directly share images and video with the streaming dongle.
Could be used as excuse to pull YouTube support from iOS
Apple is aiming to integrate Flickr and Vimeo into iOS 7, a source tells 9to5Mac. The integration is expected to work in much the same way as Facebook and Twitter support does in iOS 6, allowing single sign-ins via the Settings menu. In the case of Flickr, at least, signing in may not only add another option to iOS' built-in sharing menus, but also simplify apps with their own hooks for the service, such as Instagram. Flickr is already integrated into OS X Mountain Lion and the iOS edition of iPhoto.
Premium service to offer videographers alternative distribution system
Video streaming service Vimeo has opened up its streaming rentals and sales service to all Vimeo Pro users. Vimeo On Demand initially launched as a private beta, offering six movies in various genres to view, with customers paying between $5 and $9 per film and getting up to 60 days in order to view it.
Skype allows merging Messenger, Hotmail, Outlook contacts
Several key iOS apps have received major updates today, most notably Skype and Skype for iPad. The pair can now access Messenger, Hotmail, and Outlook.com contacts after a person has entered their Microsoft account info. People who haven't used Skype before can now finally create an account from within the app, and instant messaging has been improved with selectable emoticons, and the ability to edit messages by tapping and holding. On the dialpad, saved phone numbers can be edited without having to visit a separate window.
Beta system allows for two-month rentals, filmmaker pricing
Vimeo has updated its service to include pay-per-view rentals. Available to content creators in a private beta, the new Movies service allows filmmakers to recoup their costs by offering their projects to viewers as streamed rentals, with automatic downloads to a "Watch Later" list for offline access expected to be offered shortly after the preview phase.
Holiday promotion of Boxee TV promises 3-month cloud DVR trial
As expected, the Boxee TV is now available for purchase at Walmart. The big box store chain is the only retail location to purchase the device, with online purchasing at Boxee's site the other option. The $98 piece of hardware includes a digital antenna, and word is buyers will get a three-month trial period to the No Limits DVR service.

Boxee, which traditionally made products that focused on streaming multimedia content from local storage and the web, has now introduced the aptly named Boxee TV. It will let users watch live TV content from ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, and other channels in high definition. It also doubles as a DVR and bring Internet Apps to a connected HDTV.
Nikon pulls D800 promo videos with Canon content
In a promo video for its recently released D800 at its Bangkok launch, Nikon included footage that not only was used without permission but also shot with a Canon EOS 5D Mark II. Once the video was shared on YouTube (below), people who recognized their work began calling Nikon out on its mistake. One such party was Norwegian pro photographer Terje Sørgjerd, whose work is seen in Nikon's video, was used without permission, and was shot with a Canon 5D Mark II.
Many options no longer require logins
Vimeo has released a major update of its iOS app, bringing it up to v2.0. The main addition is a native iPad interface, which offers the unique advantage of being able to watch a clip while simultaneously browsing through others; users can switch to a fullscreen mode when needed. The app's original iPhone interface has meanwhile been simplified.
Vimeo begins closed testing of huge redesign
Vimeo will begin to roll out a newly redesigned website that will put more focus on the videos themselves. Performance and an optimized user interface are also priorities, with the latest programming languages used to build it. The more specific changes include a full-size player that's twice as wide as the old one, more privacy options, and additional ways to share and discover content.
Vimeo teams with Audiosocket on music store
The home-made video music sharing service, Vimeo, will begin offering music through its Vimeo Music Store. Unlike iTunes or other music stores, however, the music store will allow licensing songs for non-commercial and limited commercial use. The service will be powered by Audiosocket's Music-as-a-Service (MaaS) platform.
Nielsen shows price wins in mobile video app war
Most people using video apps are concerned more about how much it costs than what it contains, Nielsen said on Monday. A disproportionately large 63 percent of those using apps on iPhones, iPads, Android and elsewhere considered the price "very important" and wanted it either free or with a low subscription. Only 42 to 47 percent were sincerely concerned about what and how much video there was.
Apple TV gets Vimeo and purchased videos
Apple slipped out a new Apple TV update on Monday with a pair of major updates. The new upgrade lets users buy and stream TV shows directly from the media hub, even including those they had already bought through iTunes. Apple TV owners previously had to rent TV shows and were limited to just ABC and Fox shows as a result.
Vimeo intros iPhone app, plans Android
Vimeo gave iPhone users an alternative to iMovie on Tuesday through its own native app (free, App Store). The app both plays Vimeo clips but lets users record and edit movies using similar linear timeline. It previews differently but lets users stitch together clips and add multiple audio backdrops, titles, and transitions.
UI optimized for distance viewing
Vimeo has launched a new interface, dubbed "couch mode," that is optimized for Google TV or any other devices that take advantage of televisions or other large displays watched at a distance. The new option still allows users to like clips, add content to a Watch Later playlist, and access information about videos or other users.
Vimeo supports HTML5 embeds and Roku channel
Vimeo today gave owners of iPads, iPhones and future Android devices the option of viewing most of its video in an HTML5 embedded player. The new approach automatically switches between Flash and HTML5 and will automatically switch to the appropriate format depending on the device and software. Apple devices will usually play in H.264 where supporting versions of Android and other platforms could play the plugin-free clips in WebM.
Apple notes NYT, Flickr onboard with HTML5
Apple fired a shot at Adobe on Thursday by posting a list of iPad ready sites. All of the pages support HTML5 for video when seen on the iPad and either show a special site without Adobe Flash or have already dropped Flash in favor of the plugin-free option. In addition to known sites like Vimeo and Virgin America, it also confirms that CNN, Flickr, the New York Times and several other major sites have made the switch.
iPad would get Hulu and Netflix streaming soon
Two of the most important Internet video websites are planning native iPad apps, a pair of leaks showed in the past few hours. One set of tips claims that the Hulu iPad app is real and will carry a subscription that will also cover other services. Core details have reportedly been worked out, with only rights negotiation is left over.
Company planning on creating dedicated iPhone app
Vimeo on Wednesday announced plans to extend its movie service onto the iPhone and Android platforms, according to CNET News. All of the site's content from the staff picks and HD video showcase have already been converted to formats optimized for mobile handsets.
Google Buys On2
Google on Wednesday morning said it would buy On2 Technologies in a $106.5 million deal that could improve the quality of YouTube videos. The acquisition gives Google access to On2's video compression methods and is expected to directly translate into one or more of Google's video websites, most likely involving YouTube but potentially Google Video as well. While the search engine giant says it can't talk about product plans, it claims to be "committed to innovation" in video quality on the web.
Google's primary video site YouTube is quietly increasing the quality of its videos, viewers have found over the weekend. The Flash-based site has begun re-encoding the web versions of its videos when possible, increasing their resolution from 320x240 to 480x360. Audio quality has also improved to include stereo AAC audio versus the lower bitrate mono sound of before, users note. The improvement primarily applies to newly uploaded videos, which are automatically produced in both the regular and high-quality versions, but is also being applied to older videos. The extra quality currently remains optional and must be activated by adding a tag to the address of the improved videos.
