Panasonic adds Skype calling support to Blu-ray players

2011 Panasonic VIERA-Cast Blu-rays get Skype

Panasonic and Skype took the time at CES to announce they have teamed up to add the latter's video calling capabilities to the former's Blu-ray players. No longer relegated just to the company's connected TV sets, the functionality is available on any 2011 VIERA CAST-capable Blu-ray disc player. The biggest advantage of this for consumers is that they no longer need a Panasonic HDTV for this. As before, Skype-to-Skype voice and video calls are free, with landline calling and smartphones being charged at Skype's rates.


Panasonic switches on Netflix for 2010 HDTVs

Panasonic VIERA Cast HDTVs, Blu-rays get Netflix

Panasonic on Thursday announced it made Netflix access available to subscribers on its Internet-capable 2010 Viera HDTVs and Blu-ray players. This will give owners of compatible Panasonic devices access to streaming movies and TV episodes. A subscription to the service starts at $9 per month.


Panasonic shows 1080p 3D Blu-ray home theater systems

Panasonic intros Full HD 3D Blu-ray home theaters

Panasonic today showed off its first 108p 3D Blu-ray home theater systems, including the SC-BTT750 and SC-BTT350. Each is Viera Cast-compatible and allows access to Netflix, Amazon VOD, YouTube, Picasa, Bloomberg TV, weather and other services. The BTT750 has a Wi-Fi adapter while a DY-WL10 adapter needs to be purchased separately for the BTT350.

Panasonic 3D HD at CES

At its CES press conference on Wednesday and a day ahead of the show's official opening day, Panasonic North America's CEO Yoshi Yamada announced the company will work on integrating a 3D HD 1080p standard for TVs, kicking off with a 3D Blu-ray disc by 2010. To reach the goal, the company is working with Hollywood film producer James Cameron who is using Panasonic's specialized gear to film his upcoming blockbuster, Avatar, using the 3D HD tech. The company announced it will also launch its Panasonic Hollywood Advanced Authoring Center (PHL-AC) on February 1st.
