Soundcloud redesigns iPad app, removes audio recording function
Music discovery and streaming service Soundcloud has updated the iPad version of its iOS app. Soundcloud allows users to explore trending music and audio feeds, as well as search directly for tracks, artists and other users. In v3.7.1, the iPad app offers an over-all simplified experience. The previously-available audio uploading feature has since been removed, meaning that users need to upload any locally-stored sounds before upgrading. Free to download, Soundcloud is available for iOS devices running iOS 7.0 or later.
Early marketing focuses on 'Best of 2014' content
Apple has expanded its presence in social media, with a new Tumblr blog dedicated to iTunes. At the moment, the site focuses mainly on Apple's Best of 2014 content, in categories including movies, music, TV, and books. The company has had very little presence on Tumblr so far; it launched a page dedicated to the iPhone 5c in March, but has otherwise ignored the site.
Google updates YouTube counter after limit reached by Gangnam Style
Google has been forced to upgrade the counter used on YouTube, after Psy's Gangnam Style video exceeded its maximum value. The Register reports the video sharing site had used a 32-bit integer for the counter, which failed once more than 2,147,483,647 views of the video occurred. Google has now changed the counter to fix the problem, as well as showing what the counter would read if it kept using the old system.
Tumblr releases OS X app, features full screen viewing, easy posting
Blogging social platform Tumblr has released a native OS X app. A microblogging service, Tumblr lets users share media ranging from text, photos, music, links, video and more. Tumbler's app for OS X features a full-screen viewing option, and additionally allows posting to Tumblr from anywhere on one's Mac that has a Share button in its window. Free to download, the new Tumblr app requires OS X 10.10.
New platform for avoiding name mispronounciation launches
Namez, a new platform for creating and accessing audio clips of names being pronounced as they are meant to be heard, has emerged out of beta today. Aiming to reduce mispronunciation and its ensuing embarrassments, Namez has started to accept user-submitted recordings to add to a database that already has a variety of politicians, bands, historical figures, animals and more. Namez also offers a widget that allows users to record their own name and insert the Namez play button in their own site, mail, CV and other places. The company has said that they plan to open up an API for the platform in the future.
Could be playground for new campaign, effort to capture youth demographic
The advertising agency behind many of Apple's campaigns appears to have launched an official iPhone 5c Tumblr page, using the multi-media blogging space to showcase and promote the colors of Apple's iPhone 5c, called "ISee5c." While the junior of Apple's two current top phones is actually doing better than the iPhone 5 did at the same point in its history, reports have claimed that the fashionable phone is losing ground to the more advanced iPhone 5s.
Blu's Vivo 4.8 HD Android phone offered for $250 unlocked
Upstart Android manufacturer Blu has released a new midrange smartphone, the Vivo 4.8 HD. At 6.9mm thick (0.2 inches), the Vivo 4.8 HD offers a 4.8-inch screen with 720x1280 Super AMOLED display, the Vivo 4.8 has a 1.5GHz quad-core chip processor, 1GB RAM and 16GB of storage memory. Its camera functionality consists of an eight-megapixel rear and five-megapixel front-facing unit. Blu's Vivio 4.8 HD phone is available unlocked for $250, in black, white, yellow and pink.
Yahoo-owned blogging service will not police content hosted on servers
Tumblr has clarified its policy for users posting adult content on their blogs. While the company seemingly does not want to police such content on its service, it will be blocking blogs dedicated to porn and other similar topics from its own internal search, as well as preventing them from being indexed by third-party search engines, such as Google or Bing.
Recommends blogs during any tag search
logging service Tumblr has pushed out a new version of its iOS app, 3.4. New to the update is tag and blog search, something previously found only in third-party clients. This includes the ability to see trending tags and blogs, and get recommended blogs whenever searching for a tag. The Tumblr iOS app is a free download and runs on any device supporting iOS 5 or better.
Number of blog transfers to Wordpress spikes after Board approval
Yahoo has confirmed it has bought Tumblr, in a deal noted yesterday to be in the region of $1.1 billion. The search company has already moved its company blog over to the blogging platform, and despite CEO Marissa Mayer saying "We promise not to screw it up," there is reportedly a large jump in the number of users moving from Tumblr to Wordpress.
Stagnant Internet giant buys popular young property
In the latest step of CEO Marissa Mayer's plan to turn around popular but stagnating Internet giant Yahoo, the company's board has reportedly approved a $1.1 billion acquisition of the social sharing site Tumblr. The board met on Sunday to discuss the acquisition, which appears to have been a foregone conclusion due to the fact that Yahoo had already scheduled a Monday event on Friday. The company is expected to announce the acquisition at that event.
Offer for blogging platform claimed could top $1 billion
Yahoo is in discussions to acquire or work with blogging service Tumblr, according to reports. The talks between the two companies are, depending on the report, concerning a possible strategic alliance between the two or an outright purchase of Tumblr, with the search engine said to be offering as much as $1 billion.
User emails, subject lines, and email headers potentially downloaded
In a post on its blog, customer support outsourcing firm Zendesk has reported that a hacker had penetrated its systems, and had purloined data from its customers, including Tumblr, Twitter, and Pinterest. Zendesk officials believe that the attacker was able to download email addresses and subject lines from support mails sent to its clients.
Includes new dashboard, offline mode
Blogging service Tumblr has launched a major revision of its iPhone app. Now at v3.0.0, the app's interface has been completely restructured, for instance using a new Dashboard interface, a new image view, and shortcuts to the camera and text post functions accessed by swiping the Compose button. An offline mode lets users post, like, reply, or reblog at any time; actions are synced when back online.
Spotify now has pseudo-embedded audio option
Spotify on Wednesday hoped to give more public exposure to its music through the Play Button. The new web code lets sites post individual songs or whole playlists that, while they need Spotify open in the background, can be controlled directly from the browser. Spotify sees it as a way to legally embed music and, by extension, pay artists for each listen.
Tumblr Radar now available
Tumblr has released a significant update to its smartphone-optimized Android app. The overhaul brings a completely redesigned interface, placing live notifications for multiple blogs in one place. The company suggests the tweaks bring a better photo browsing experience, while users can now take advantage of the Tumblr Radar for quick access to popular images.

Tumblr launches anti-SOPA campaign with calls
Tumblr has joined the fight against the SOPA bill that would give the US the right to close the domains of any site that is thought to illegally host file sharing. The company announced it generated 87,834 phone calls to US Congressional representatives in an concentrated attempt to prevent the bill from becoming law. The Stop Online Piracy Act is before the House Judiciary Committee.
Mixel is for creative types, allows for collages
A new iPad app lets users create digital collages from a variety of sources including personal photo collections, Facebook photos, Bing search images and more. Called Mixel (free, App Store), it's also unique among similar apps as it shares all creations with the Mixel community to tear apart and do with what they will. Created by Dogpatch Labs, the app is meant for creative types who don't need to be sitting at a dedicated desk or studio to indulge in their passion, said founder Khoi Vinh.
