Microsoft has opened up pre-orders for the Surface 2 with LTE in the United Kingdom. Just as with its launch last month in the United States, the UK edition will be limited to just a 64GB model, and its £539 ($905) represents a £100 ($168) increase over the standard Wi-Fi model. Microsoft will be shipping the Windows RT tablet on the 8th of May.
Transit Wireless today announced that Verizon Wireless' voice and 3G and 4G-LTE data services are now available in New York City subway stations. The stations cover the west side of Manhattan from 23rd Street to 96th Street, including Times Square, Rockefeller Center, Lincoln Center and Columbus Circle. Notably absent from the first round of build-outs are both Penn Station and Grand Central Station.
Efforts to install wireless in New York City subways gained a significant boost late on Friday as Transit Wireless said it had reached deals with AT&T and T-Mobile to provide cellphone access at subway stations. The two GSM carriers have a 10-year agreement to link their phones to Transit Wireless' network in a plan that will eventually reach all 277 terminals in the city. Either carrier will have the option of renewing its deals in five-year blocks for four instances, representative Pat Smith told Bloomberg.
New York City's soon-to-start extension of cellular and Wi-Fi access into subway tunnels will sometimes provide a connection through the entire tunnel, contractors said on Friday. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority's plan to give access to stations will by its nature propagate the signal through the tunnels. In Manhattan and other areas with both frequent stops and wide tunnels, the signals would have enough room that they could make an almost end-to-end link.
