Online Mac-oriented game store GameTree Mac has unexpectedly and quietly closed its doors, after being in operation for a total of nine years. The store's website, which allowed customers to buy and download games made for and ported to OS X, has been replaced by a message that it is time for the service to "ride into the sunset," as well as thanking the Mac gaming community for its support.
In an unusual move, ArenaNet has made a beta release of Guild Wars 2, a massively-multiplayer online role-playing game, available to gamers with a select class of Mac machines, mostly very recent releases with beefy video cards. The beta comes just a few weeks after the release of the Windows version, using Transgaming's Cider technology to make the port possible. While Mac users have been able to play the game using Boot Camp or virtualizers, a platform-specific release is welcome news.

Khronos today established a standard that would provide a common platform for touch and motion controls. StreamInput would be a royalty-free programming interface for not just touchscreens but haptic (vibration) feedback, motion sensors like the PlayStation Move or Wii remotes, and even depth camera systems like Microsoft's Kinect. Augmented reality apps, games, and others with advanced controls could keep every device in sync and use extensions to easily add new methods as they come about.

TransGaming has launched the Mac version of its Command & Conquer: Red alert 3, real-time strategy war game. After being previously released for Windows last year, the game takes place in an alternate history of Earth, where the Soviet Union has gone back in time and assassinated Albert Einstein before the creation of technologies, in order to weaken the Allies power. The assassination is successful, but in doing so, a third world power has now risen up called the Rising Sun, and poses a threat to both the Allies and Soviet Union.

In addition to providing online purchase, Game Tree Online will provide news and game promotions, and will allow users to post reviews.
