High-speed service coming to city Comcast sued to stop municipal fiber network
Comcast has announced a new location that will receive its 2Gbps fiber Internet service, one that it has a litigious history with. Chattanooga, Tennessee will be getting the new Gigabit Pro service starting in June, a city that at one time Comcast sued to try and prevent the city's municipal fiber network from being constructed and competing against Comcast itself.
Eligible products may vary from state to state
Apple has updated a promotional page to let shoppers know about tax holidays coming up in nine US states between August 1st and the 3rd. The states include Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Mexico, South Carolina, and Tennessee. During the holidays, Apple has said it will drop sales tax charges for qualifying purchases made online or at retail. Although taxes will still appear during online checkouts, proper totals should appear in email confirmations.
Comments opened after organizations in Tennessee, North Carolina petitioned agency
After receiving petitions from the Electric Power Board (EPB) of Chattanooga, Tennessee and the City of Wilson in North Carolina, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is opening comments on the subject of preempting state laws. Based on Chairman Tom Wheeler's previous comments on municipal broadband, the FCC would get involved in the battle if it meant better serving consumers.
Nudges people into exploiting holidays at online Apple store
In new web and email promotions, Apple is pushing people to take advantage of upcoming US tax holidays via its online store. Ten states are holding holidays, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Mexico, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Of these, Florida is the lone addition in 2013.
Should allow AT&T to make significant LTE expansions
AT&T has bought $1.9 billion in 700 MHz B spectrum from Verizon Wireless, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing. AT&T says that the licenses should cover over 42 million people in 18 states: California, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Louisiana, Montana, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wyoming. As a part of the deal, it will also get AWS (Advanced Wireless Services) spectrum in five of those markets.
Middle-mile network offers 10Gbps connections to businesses
EarthLink has completed construction on its fiber optic network in Tennessee, a project it started in 2011. The Eastern Tennessee Middle Mile Fiber Broadband Project laid more than 500 miles of fiber in “underserved communities” across the state, running between Nashville and Knoxville from east to west, and between Blountville and Chattanooga.
New York, Tennessee, Australia locations announced
Apple is opening three new retail stores this Saturday, June 30th. The first is the Ridge Hill location in Yonkers, New York. The outlet is just outside of New York City, and will be Apple's 17th in the state; a disproportionate number of those are clustered in and around the New York City area.
Nashville one of 10 US openings planned for 2012
Additional details have emerged on three more future Apple Stores, notes ifoAppleStore. In Italy, job listings have appeared for a new store in Torino, one that was previously just rumored for more than two years. One possible address may be the former Mondadori bookstore on Via Roma 80, an arcade situated in the midst of other international retailers. Apple tends to prefer building stores in luxury or at least high-profile shopping areas.
Initial access limited to Denver, Nashville
Comcast has begun an initial rollout of its AnyPlay TV service for the iPad. The technology allows Comcast subscribers to watch live TV over their home Wi-Fi network, regardless of what someone may be watching on a TV in another room. On top of the Wi-Fi restriction, though, the option is currently available only to Xfinity HD Triple Play subscribers, and just those in Denver and Nashville.
