HP has expanded its tablet offerings with several new models powered by Nvidia's new Tegra 4 hardware, the Slate8 Pro and Slate7 Extreme. Both take advantage of Tegra 4's quad-core ARM Cortex-A15 processor and 72-core GPU, with limited customizations to the stock Android OS.
Nvidia has formally unveiled the Tegra Note, a new seven-inch tablet platform that had been previewed under the name Tegra Tab. As expected, the device is powered by the company's Tegra 4 SoC with a quad-core Cortex-A15 processor and a 72-core GeForce GPU.
Former Google VP for Android has already taken up his new dutieswith Chinese Android handset maker Xiaomi. The new VP of Xiaomi Global attended today's launch event for the company's new flagship smartphone, the Xiaomi Mi-3. The new handset boasts high-end specs including the option of a Nvidia Tegra 4 or Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processors in a 5-inch 1080p device retailing outright for as little as $327 for the 16GB model or $408 for a 64GB variant.
Nvidia looks to be branching out further into the mobile hardware space with reports and photos coming out of China showing a 7-inch tablet branded the 'Tegra Tab.' The GPU and mobile SOC maker has recently released the Tegra 4-powered Shield handheld gaming console, so it is familiar with bringing hardware to the market. However, while the Shield is powered by Android, the operating system on the Tegra Tab is yet to be revealed -- though it seems that Android would be the logical format given its popularity and market penetration.
Nvidia has updated the expected shipping date of its handheld Android gaming system to July 31st, following a fault. The Tegra 4-powered Shield was originally set to ship on July 27th, but an undefined "mechanical issue" relating to a "third-party component" caused the extended delay, with early buyers likely to get their purchases in early August.
Game peripherals producer Mad Catz has provided more information about its Android-based micro-console. Project M.O.J.O. has been confirmed as being powered by an Nvidia Tegra 4 system-on-chip, will be supplied with the C.T.R.L.R. game controller, and takes up a smaller footprint than its direct competition, the Kickstarter-funded Ouya.
The CEO of Nvidia used Computex to demonstrate how Tegra 4 could be used to improve stylus input on a tablet. Jen-Hsun Huang drew on a Tegra 4 reference tablet with a basic capacitive stylus, and appeared to show the tablet being able to detect some level of pressure sensitivity, without the aid of an active stylus and digitizer.
Nvidia has opened up pre-orders for its handheld gaming device, three days earlier than anticipated. Orders for the Nvidia Shield have commenced through the Nvidia website, with retail partners Newegg, Gamestop, and Canada Computer also accepting pre-orders from customers wanting the Tegra 4-powered Android game system.
Nvidia’s forthcoming Tegra 4 chip may have received an early benchmark if an AnTuTu score that has been posted online is to be believed. According to the post, the Tegra 4 produced a score of over 32,000 points, outgunning the 1.9GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 found in the Samsung Galaxy S4. By comparison, the Galaxy S4’s Snapdragon chip produces a score of 25,000 points, while the HTC One with the same Snapdragon chip clocked at 1.7GHz scores 23,600 points.
Nvidia has formally introduced its Project Grey chip, which is officially known as the Tegra 4i. Marketed as a superior alternative to Qualcomm's Snapdragon offerings, which have proved extremely popular in the smartphone market, the new chip brings a much smaller footprint than the current Tegra 4 SoC while adding an integrated LTE modem.
