Television manufacturer TCL, announced that seven new TCL Roku TVs will be available later this month in-store and online at major retailers nationwide. Following the launch of three 3700 series models in March, TCL is expanding its 2015 TCL Roku TV lineup with three 3800 Design Series models and four top-of-the-line 3850 Decorator Series models.
The first smart televisions running on Roku OS are heading to market. The Roku TV, ranges created by TCL and Hisense originally announced at CES in January, uses similar software to drive its smart TV functionality as the Roku set-top box, giving users a simplified interface and access to a selection of over 1,500 streaming channels offering over 200,000 movies and TV shows.
Roku is expanding its reach from Internet-connected set-top boxes into smart televisions. The Roku TV, developed in partnership with television manufacturers TCL and Hisense, will provide all the functionality of its existing streaming video devices but built into the television itself, with the first units set to reach customers and retailers sometime this fall.
TCL Corporation, the Chinese company that licenses the Alcatel name for smartphones, has revealed that its forthcoming flagship smartphone will have an octa-core processor. The Idol X+ will be released as a collaboration between TCL and Chinese online retailer JD.com, though the release date for the device is as yet unknown. That octa-core chipset is said to be produced by MediaTek, and TCL is expected to pack the device with enough high-end tech in its other aspects to take advantage of the processing power.
Chinese manufacturer TCL is attempting to take the lead in Ultra HD televisions, by preparing a budget 50-inch television for sale in September. The 4K-capable television revealed by the company is flanked by other HDTVs it will be launching in the United States next month, including 40-inch, 46-inch, and 55-inch models.
Swedish assembly-required furniture maker Ikea has now gotten into electronics with the Uppleva, which translates to Experience. The design is a home theater system with the HDTV, Blu-ray player/audio receiver, and sound system integrated into a stand that can be customized to a buyer's taste. The electronics come from China's TCL Multimedia, though specs are thin.
Chinese smartphone designers are quietly forming a pact to fend off patent lawsuits from Apple, Microsoft, and Nokia, a rumor maintained Friday. Lenovo and ZTE, as well as smaller firms like Coolpad, Konka, and TCL, were said by Digitimes to be forming a collective. The details weren't given, although a patent defense would most likely involve pooling patent resources together and sharing resources on how to work around other companies' patents.
