Full upgrade to Windows 10 not available for Windows RT devices

Owners of the Microsoft Surface will not receive the full upgrade to Windows 10, but will still benefit from some updates, a report claims. While Microsoft will be making the next version of its operating system available to systems running Windows 7, 8, and 8.1, including the Surface Pro range, the Windows RT-based Surface will be missing out.

Microsoft has reenabled the Windows 8.1 update for Windows RT, following the update having been pulled temporarily due to its crashing some users' computers. Microsoft announced the return of the 8.1 update in a tweet on Tuesday. The update is available in the Windows Store as a free download.

Microsoft executive VP hints at Windows RT on more ARM devices

Microsoft may still be working on a way for Windows RT to still be useful, following its relative lack of success with the platform in the Surface RT. Executive vice president Terry Myerson, head of the operating system at Microsoft, hinted that Windows RT may find a useful place in phablets at some point in the future.

Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang has revealed that the company is again collaborating with Microsoft, this time on the sequel to the Surface RT. Nvidia worked with Microsoft on the original Surface RT, which has recently had $150 slashed off its price due to poor sales. Microsoft was also forced to take a $900 million write-down on the cost of the cuts in its last quarterly financial statement. However, the next Surface RT will run Outlook, which Huang believes is a key factor in why user's have been bypassing the ARM-based version of Windows.

32GB model hits $349, 64GB down to $449 in hefty Surface RT discount

Microsoft has cut the price of its Surface RT tablet, in what appears to be an effort to reduce stock in the slate computing device. As earlier rumored, the 32GB Surface RT has dropped in price from $499 to $349, the 64GB model is now $449 instead of $599, with the same $150 discount being applied to the black Touch Cover versions, at $449 and $549 respectively.

Microsoft is working on a version of its Surface RT slate computer that uses a Qualcomm processor, according to a report. The change in chip comes at the same time as Microsoft drops the price of the tablet for educational users, in what appears to be a clear-out of current Surface RT stock ahead of a device refresh.

Microsoft is increasing the number of countries where customers can buy the Surface RT and Surface Pro tablets. The Surface Pro will be available in 24 more countries, while the Surface RT will be launching in Malaysia on April 25th, in Mexico by the end of may, and in Korea and Thailand in June. The expansion will see the Surface RT be available in 29 countries, and the Surface Pro in 27 in total.

Microsoft is pushing a new round of updates for the Surface RT, this time to fix a Wi-Fi issue along with additional stability and performance enhancements. It is the latest in what have become monthly performance and stability updates Microsoft has issued for the Surface RT since its launch nearly four months ago. In our quick hands-on with the update, it has fixed our issue with Wi-Fi showing ‘Limited’ connectivity and seems to have also delivered a decent performance boost.

Microsoft limits initial run of Surface Pro to just 1 million

Microsoft has ordered only 1 million units of its Surface Pro for its launch on February 9, according to Digitimes. Upstream supply chain sources say that initial orders for the Intel-powered version of the Surface are well down on the initial orders Microsoft placed for the ARM-based Surface RT when it launched. The news coincides with analysis from IHS iSuppli supplied to CNET showing that Microsoft may have only sold as many as 750,000 Surface RT tablets for the last quarter.

Microsoft Outlook for Windows RT in development, may not see release

Microsoft is testing a native Outlook email client for Windows RT, reports CNET. Currently, Windows RT devices like Microsoft’s own Surface RT ship with a free version of Office that includes Word, PowerPoint, Excel and OneNote. However, Microsoft opted to launch the Surface RT without a functional email client in the desktop UI, reserving it for the Start screen UI only.

Staples to start carrying Surface on December 12

Following earlier reports that Microsoft's Surface was bound for more outlets, Staples, the world's largest office products company, announced that it would begin carrying the Surface RT at all of its locations and in its online store as early as December 12. The move comes as Microsoft is looking to expand the availability of its Windows RT tablet, even as conflicting reports have it cast as a flop or a solid performer. The Redmond software giant has announced that it will be increasing production of the Surface RT and putting the device into more traditional retailers to get it closer to consumers by the middle of this month.
