Sony will not be using Google's Android Wear platform for its smart watches in the future, an executive has revealed. Ravi Nookala, head of Sony Mobile in the US, said in an interview that the manufacturer will continue to use its own SmartWatch platform for the immediate future, instead of switching to Google's recently-announced wearable device platform.
Sony is hoping to tighten up its security surrounding its mobile devices in the future, after the launch of the Xperia Z1. The electronics giant has allegedly placed posters in its offices to warn its staff away from sharing details with non-employees, complete with its list of rules for handing confidential, prototype mobile devices.
Sony is said to be mulling the possibility of introducing Xperia devices powered by Windows Phone 8. While Sony has offered Windows Mobile devices in the past, it opted to steer clear of Windows Phone 7 while it sought to gain a foothold in the Android space currently dominated by Samsung. It currently has an Android smartphone portfolio exceeding 20 devices, however a European Sony Mobile boss has indicated that the Japanese company is in talks with Microsoft.
Sony Mobile is to move its headquarters and cut its global headcount by 15 percent. As well as shifting its corporate headquarters and certain other functions from Lund, Sweden to Tokyo, Japan, the company also plans to cut loose around 1000 personnel during the 2012 to 2013 financial years, in an effort to increase operational efficiency and reduce costs.
