Samsung has laid out its plans for a connected home at CES, one which allows multiple appliances to communicate with each other. Samsung Smart Home is billed as a platform for managing a variety of devices, such as washing machines, refrigerators and televisions, something the company hinted at in late December when it added cross-device communication support to its smart TV SDK.
Deezer has made apps for its music streaming service available for Panasonic and Philips smart televisions, with devices from NetRange, Loewe, TCL Thomson, Sharp, and Vestel also set to receive it in the future. Earlier app releases for smart TVs from LG and Samsung have received a few updates at the same time, including the ability access the playlists of friends, a shuffle mode, and enhanced search functionality.
Redbox and Verizon have publicly announced that Redbox Instant will be launching its streaming service later this month. Offering unlimited streaming of thousands of movies, Redbox Instant has also been confirmed to be offered through the web, as well as iOS and Android portable devices, Samsung and LG Blu-Ray players and Smart TVs, and Google TV.
The smart TV sector is moving from technological novelty to the mainstream, according to NPD DIsplaySearch. The consumer information company has just published its Quarterly Smart TV Shipment and Forecast Report, finding that smart TV shipments should grow 15 percent worldwide this year. The growth in smart TVs is seen as indicative of a larger trend among consumers, one in which media consumption habits are shifting to adjust to the digital era.
