An updated version of an entry-level Slingbox streamer is being offered by Sling Media, this time with a change to the way it deals with apps. The Slingbox M2 is effectively a tweaked version of last year's Slingbox M1, providing remote access to home TV channels, but now instead of levying a charge for each mobile device connected to the set-top box, Sling is instead allowing users to do this at no extra charge.
British carrier Three is starting to offer same-day delivery for smartphone orders, within central London, saving customers from going to a store. The trial will allow customers to order a Samsung Galaxy S5 or the iPhone 6 from the carrier from Monday to Friday between 7am and 3pm at "selected London postcodes," reports Engadget, with customers paying £15 ($23.50) for the privilege.
Sling Media has launched two new models of its Slingbox media streamer, including one spotted at the FCC one month ago. Upgrades to the Slingbox 350 and 500 launched in 2012, the Sling M1 is an entry-level streaming device providing simple remote access to home TV channels, while the SlingTV adds a software update to existing Slingbox 500 hardware to provide smart TV features and to act as an alternative to a set-top box from a cable provider.
Sling Media may be preparing to launch its first media streamer for two years, since the introduction of the Slingbox 350 and 500 models in late-2012, if an FCC filing is to be believed. The Slingbox M1 is shown in a photograph to be a compact and nondescript black box, which could allow for the same streaming of TV content over the Internet as earlier models but at a lower price.
Slingbox announced in a post to its blog on Friday that its SlingPlayer app is now available for Windows 8.1 and RT devices. The new app pairs with a Slingbox in order to transmit video content from a user's home computer or other device directly to a user's mobile device. Users downloading the app will have access to a free test-drive period of 24 hours before it will require them to decide whether they wish to purchase it for $15.
Sling Media has introduced several new features for its mobile apps and set-top boxes. A firmware update for the Slingbox 500 brings support for Blockbuster On Demand content, including trailers and movie rentals. Users can also access their photos and videos stored on an attached USB drive.
Sling Media has rolled out the Slingbox 500 and Slingbox 350, two completely redesigned retail Slingbox products that provide live streaming of television, sporting events, recorded programming and premium content to smartphones, tablets, laptops and connected devices. In addition, the Slingbox 500 introduces new features, including Wi-Fi and HDMI, as well as a platform for delivering personal content to the TV.
Chipmaker Broadcom has made a few significant deals this week, partnering with Sling Media for its EchoStar set-top technology and with Myriad for the Alien Vue solution. The deals could result in a Broadcom system-on-chip that may allow set-top boxes for TVs that run Android apps and aren't limited to home Wi-Fi networks. Thus far, only Dish Network allows place-shifting in Sling's Slingbox set-tops.
Sling Media has finally released a web app that allows Logitech Revue Google TV users to access its Slingbox service. We sampled the feature nearly one year ago at CES, and a beta showed up late in May that allowed users to watch Slingbox content in other rooms via streaming. Users can access the SlingPlayer app from Google Spotlight and use it to change channels, browse the program guide, and watch or schedule recordings on a connected DVR.
The Boxee Box got an unusual feature addition Tuesday after the Boxee team added a SlingPlayer app. Its media hub can now stream and remotely control devices hooked up to a Slingbox Pro-HD or Solo, such as a cable DVR or even another networked media hub. It carries Sling's latest program guide but should otherwise be familiar to those who've used one of the larger-screened SlingPlayer apps.
