An earlier report that saw Google eyeing startup satellite imagining company Skybox Imaging was confirmed today, with an announcement from the companies. The search giant will acquire Skybox for $500 million in cash, a figure that was lower than the $1 billion the company was originally thought to fetch. Google says that buying Skybox will help them keep Google Maps "accurate with up-to-date imagery."
The first Windows Mobile 7 devices may ship significantly ahead of Microsoft's typical release schedules, say sources for reporter Mary Jo Foley. Adding to recent observations from Motorola executives, Foley understands from sources that Microsoft plans a relatively quick turnaround from its Windows Mobile 6.5 upgrade. Although the modest refresh to 6.1 now isn't expected to arrive on shipping devices until September -- seven months after an expected introduction this month -- testers should already have 7.0 by November, with shipping hardware due in April.
In-depth plans for Microsoft's SkyBox sync service have been leaked, according to anonymous sources said to be "well-connected" to the matter. A v1.0 beta of the service is expected to go live in mid-February, and provide basic backup, restore, management and sharing functions for cellphone data. The service should also be free, due to an advertising-laced web portal.
Microsoft is poised to use February's Mobile World Congress to unveil a set of online mobile services that would be its own equivalents to Apple's Internet components for the iPhone. In addition to confirming the existence of SkyMarket, a dedicated app store for Windows Mobile devices, alleged sources for Neowin claim Microsoft will use the phone show to introduce SkyBox, a mobile sync service to backup and share calendars, contacts, e-mail and photos between devices not unlike Apple's MobileMe.
