Nokia has agreed to purchase the entire 50-percent stake owned by Siemens in the Nokia Siemens Networks joint venture. The deal, reportedly worth 1.7 billion euro ($2.2 billion), sees Nokia take complete control of the company, which works on network infrastructure and the deployment of LTE-based mobile phone networks.
Computer chipmaker AMD will turn to Cyclos Semiconductor for its resonant clock mesh technology in its upcoming Piledriver-based chips. They will replace the Bulldozer-core chips introduced in the fall of 2011. The new technology will reduce the chip's clock distribution power.
Nokia Siemens Networks on Wednesday started a sweeping chang of the company that will focus on mobile networks and services. As part of this, the company will undergo one of the largest job cuts for a technology firm in recent memory, cutting 17,000 jobs by 2013. This represents 23 percent of all of its employees.

Nokia's troubles worsened on Sunday after a new leak uncovered problems at its cellular equipment venture Nokia Siemens Networks. It has reportedly failed to sell a controlling stake in the company and is instead turning to reorganization to stop its bleeding cashflow. Under the plans divulged to the WSJ, both Nokia and Siemens would put money into NSN or else let the less unstable Siemens get control.
VirnetX is expanding the scope of lawsuits targeting several major technology corporations, according to an announcement. The company has won a new patent from the USPTO, Agile Network Protocol for Secure Communications Using Secure Domain Names, which it is amending to complaints in two separate suits. The first case lists Aastra, Apple, Cisco and NEC as defendants; the second is leveled against Mitel and Siemens.
At the IPTV World Forum, the Linux Foundation introduced the MeeGo Smart TV Working Group (pdf). Already, the group includes such high-profile members as Nokia, Siemens and Intel, along with Sigma Designs and MIPS Technologies, among others. These companies will work along with cable providers to create and grow out a system of developers and content providers for smart TVs.
Apple, Siemens and technology licensor Sisvel together were reported as having forced an exhibitor to shut down an exhibitor's booth at CeBIT. The three had the unnamed e-reader and netbook maker's floor space cleared out on Friday after they alleged that the company violated patents. Lawyers for Apple, Siemens and Sisvel are said to have visited the company's booth on Thursday and levied a 10,000 euro ($13,626) fine in advance of a raid the following day by German police.
NVIDIA is considering introducing its first true external notebook graphics, a company executive says. According to a recent Xbitlabs report, NVIDIA notebook GPU division general manager Rene Haas sees a big opportunity in such a market. The product could come in the form of a docking station or another type of external device.
Siemens this week announced it has reached a new record in wireless data transfer speeds, beating the previous speed by a factor of 2.5. Together with the Heinrich Hertz Institute, the company was able to achieve a speed of 500Mbps thanks to white LED light. The light-emitting diode used in the test was produced by Osram, a Siemens subsidiary, and transferred data over a distance of 16.4 feet. The Ostar LED is one of the brightest LEDs on the market.
