Sony Ericsson today surprised the industry by turning a small profit for its first quarter of 2010. The cellphone designer swung from a $226 million loss as recently as this fall to a $28.4 million surplus in the winter. Some of the recovery came through job cuts but was also helped by a major shift towards smartphones, which included the first full uninterrupted quarter of sales for the Satio but also the late shipping of the Vivaz and its most important phone, the Android-based XPERIA X10.
The agency that governs advertising in the UK has found that a television ad for the Sony Ericsson Satio violated that country's truth-in-advertising law. The Advertising Standards Authority called the ad "misleading" because it implied a Facebook app was either preinstalled or available for the Satio. Early versions of the phone did not contain a Facebook app, and software problems made it impossible for users to install.
Sony Ericsson announced it has resolved the issues that plagued its Aino Satio smartphones, addressing the former's freezing touchscreen and the latter's software glitch. The issues led UK retailers to stop selling the devices, and at least one retailer will bring back sales after the issue is addressed. The firmware update will also improve the performance of the phones and stabilize their operation.
The Sony Ericsson Satio smartphone may soon go back on sale, as a software issue that caused it to be pulled from store shelves in the UK may have been addressed with an update. The firmware, R1CA037, downloadable over a PC and then synchronized to the handset, is said to only work with unbranded Satio devices and not ones sold by carrier Vodafone in the UK, for example. While what the update has exactly changed, if anything, remains unknown, but the phone is said to respond much faster now.
Users of the Sony Aino smartphone in the UK are finding some problems when using the device's touchscreen interface, according to a Thursday report. Only a small numbers of the devices in Britain are affected, says Sony Ericsson spokesperson Mattias Holm, and the company is working on resolving the issue. Details of the problem have not been disclosed, however.
