Qualcomm pushes for 300Gbps in-flight broadband

Mobile chip and network gear maker Qualcomm has now proposed an in-flight wireless network that would bring speeds as fast as 300Gbps. It would use spectrum in the 14GHz to 14.5GHz bands for this, and the so-called Next-Gen AG system would use about 150 towers located throughout the US. The network would use familiar airwave techniques to get ther, including a time division duplex communications mode and orthogonal multiplexing, which stitches together multiple signals into a coherent whole.

Skype Access expands to more than 500,000

At the Mobile World Congress, Skype introduced new partners in its Skype Access program. This partner program lets Skype users pay for access to Wi-Fi hotspots from a number of partner companies from their Skype accounts. This way, they can access the networks on a pay-as-you-go, per-minute basis rather than needing to pay by the hour, as is usually the case.

Southwest Airlines to expand in-flight Wi-Fi

Southwest Airlines announced recently that it has concluded testing Wi-Fi Internet access on four of its airplanes and has plans to expand the in-flight service to its entire fleet as early as next year. Passengers involved in the testing have returned positive feedback, and Southwest itself is pleased with the technical performance of the in-flight service and the customer response, according to a Friday report.

Alaska Airlines Wi-Fi

Alaska Airlines recently announced it will offer a satellite-based trial Wi-Fi service during its flights to users with Wi-Fi-enabled notebooks, smartphones and other personal electronics devices with wireless Internet access. The service, offered by Row 44, has been in development for the past two years and will be available on the Airlines' specially-outfitted Boeing 737-700 passenger jets. Most common features will be accessible, including web browsing, online music and games, e-mail, IM chat and connections to Virtual Private Networks (VPNs).
