Orders for Intel Classmate PC cancelled
Orders for Intel's Classmate PC have been canceled and shipments suspended from governments and OEM partners in many emerging markets, Taiwan-based component makers said. According to a Wednesday DigiTimes report, this is due to the economic downturn and the buyers in question reassigning their budgets to fight its impact. As well, the necessary network infrastructure rollout needed to provide content for the educational PC in developing countries has slowed for the same reason.

HP 11 6 inch netbook Rumor
HP's netbook line should get a larger 11.6-inch model if a source today proves true. Computer industry contacts for DigiTimes say Quanta is about to mass-produce such a system next month. Other details aren't published, but the larger size likely means a 1366x768 screen resolution instead of the more common 1024x600. One of HP's 10-inch netbooks should also get a revision and is purportedly slated by its manufacturer, Inventec, to be mass-produced in September.

Acer dual OS netbook due
An Acer netbook with both Windows XP and Android, which gives users the option of booting into either operating system, is due to ship sometime this August, DigiTimes reported on Monday. First announced at the start of June, the netbook's main specs are unknown at this time, but prices aren’t likely to be lower than Windows XP-exclusive netbooks, as Acer still needs to pay license fees for the Microsoft operating system.

Apple Touch Netbook Oct
Rumors of a touchscreen Apple netbook gained fuel on Monday with a claim by China's InfoTimes that supposedly confirms launch details. Backing earlier claims, the site says the system will use a 9.7-inch touchscreen supplied by Wintek and is due to ship in October. Apple is expected to avoid competing directly with regular, sub-$500 netbooks and may use the touchscreen and other features to bring the price closer to $800, much like the Sony VAIO P.

Nokia Atom Netbook Soon
The first fruits of the Intel-Nokia partnership could come within a matter of weeks, the Taiwan-area Commercial Times newspaper claimed today. Stating the rumor as fact, it insists that reports of Nokia netbooks are true and that a portable based on Intel Atom chips could come as soon as this summer. Its details aren't known, but Quanta would be contracted to build the computer.

NVIDIA insurer sues
NVIDIA's insurance company, The National Union Fire Insurance Company (NUFI) of Pittsburgh, filed a case in a California district court last week regarding NVIDIA's negotiations and settlement of other lawsuits the company faced from notebook makers regarding NVIDIA's faulty chipsets. In its court statement, NUFI said NVIDIA has "not permitted" it to join in NVIDIA's negotiations of chip claims or to reach other agreements. NVIDIA supplied GPUs to notebook makers that include Apple, ASUS, Compal, Dell, Fujitsu-Siemens, Toshiba, Quanta, Samsung and others, some of which have or still can sue the chipmaker.

Touchscreen notebooks due
Taiwanese notebook manufacturers are developing touchscreen notebooks for use with Windows 7, which natively supports touch inputs, DigiTimes reported on Thursday, citing market sources. Working together with touchscreen panel makers, Wistron and Quanta are planning on releasing notebooks that use infrared optical touch screens, while ASUS and Acer are rumored to get projective capacitive touch and resistive touch panels.

Compal scaling back MIDs
DigiTimes reported on Wednesday that Compal Electronics reduced the budget and other resources for mobile Internet devices (MIDs) as the company believes the future of the market segment is uncertain. The report cites unnamed industry sources for the information, and Compal itself has confirmed that some of its MID focus was shifted into netbook development. It will continue to ship MIDs in smaller volumes.

Foxconn Wants Mac Netbook
Foxconn is hoping to land an order for an Apple device which is now described as a netbook, Taiwan's Commercial Times newspaper says. The company is already one of Apple's key manufacturers for MacBooks but is seen as "in the running" among other competing firms to build the new, smaller portable. Details of when the order would ship, or the system itself, aren't included with the claimed leak.

HP to out CULV notebooks
HP is expected to introduce a few 13.3-inch notebooks equipped with Consumer Ultra Low Voltage (CULV) processors in the second quarter, industry sources indicate, according to a Tuesday DigiTimes report. The most likely suppliers of the low-voltage chips to HP will be Quanta or Compal, or both, as they are the main manufacturers of CULV chips. Acer has similar plans for 13.3-inch CULV processors, though it has not narrowed down its supplier. An 11.6-inch Acer notebook with a CULV CPU is due out in April, with Quanta supplying the processor.

Apple Netbook 10in Rumor
The purported Apple touchscreen netbook has gained a minor amount of corroboration on Tuesday from sources of Dow Jones. The trading outlet echoes the earlier claims that Wintek is producing a touchscreen for an Apple computer assembled by Quanta but adds that the screen will measure between 9.7 and 10 inches diagonal, or roughly in line with existing netbook sizes. Other details are still "under evaluation," according to the unnamed sources behind the reported leak.

Apple Touch Netbook Rumor
Apple is gearing up suppliers to build a touchscreen netbook that would ship in the summer of this year, according to Taiwan's Commercial Times. Following a confirmation by local display maker Wintek that it's developing touchscreens for new Apple products, the Times said that at least some of these panels are destined for a netbook that would ship sometime during the summer. A regular supplier of Apple, Quanta, would manufacture the netbook itself.

Quanta MacBook Air Rival
Normally known only for manufacturing notebooks for others, Quanta is making a system of its own that would compete against Apple's MacBook Air in dimensions but aim at the low end, alleged tips from within the PC industry suggest to Digitimes. The system would measure between just 1-2cm (0.79-0.39in) thick but would be a step in quality above large netbooks like the MSI X-Slim 320, which uses an Intel Atom to keep its price down despite a 13.4-inch display.

Acer to replace Aspire
Computer and peripherals maker Acer is reportedly thinking of stopping shipments of its 8.9-inch Aspire netbook to make room for the soon-to-be-released 10.1-inch Aspire One 103 model. The 103 is due out in February, and while the timing of the 8.9-inch netbook's phase-out was not definitively announced, it is due to happen sometime in the second quarter of the year.

Apple netbook builder?
An Apple netbook may yet be in the works, wording from the Taiwanese government suggests. The country's Government Information Office recently issued a new report, in which it claims that local manufacturer Quanta is "expected to add Sony and Apple as clients for the contract manufacture of Netbook computers in 2009." Although the Sony netbooks could likely be from the new VAIO P series, Apple has not officially announced any plans to release a netbook.

New iMac contracts
Contrary to a previous report suggesting that Quanta Computer would manufacture the new iMacs, Economic Daily News now claims that Foxconn Electronics will build the devices. The paper anticipates shipments of 800,000 units per month, a figure that remains unchanged from the earlier speculation. Foxconn Precision Components (FPC) is allegedly working with Catcher Technology to produce the magnesium-aluminum alloy chassis, while the cooling components will come from FPC and Auras Technology.

Quanta w New iMac in Jan
Large-scale electronics assembler Quanta is preparing to large numbers of a new iMac due early January, a report from the Taiwan-area Economic Daily News. Previously well-known for building a significant portion of Apple's computers, Quanta is allegedly set to produce a new iMac that would ship in large volumes starting in January; as many as 800,000 per month would ship during the first three months of the year, the newspaper claims.

Quanta intro Optical Touch
Taiwan's Quanta Computer revealed a new touchscreen technology recently at the WinHEC Taipei 2008 expo. Called Optical Touch, it uses two cameras placed in the top corners of the display instead of a capacitive or resistive touch panel and will be compatible with Microsoft Windows 7. The cameras track users' finger positions and move the pointer accordingly and support multi-touch gestures including rotate and zoom.

ASUS Eee Top 22in Coming
ASUS' just-launched Eee Top all-in-one PCs will be followed up by significantly larger models in the near future, a claim by market contacts would indicate. Pointing out that the new 15.6-inch desktop is being outsourced to Quanta for manufacturing rather than ASUS itself, the alleged sources say that the outside contractor will also be used for a new range of Eee Tops with 20- and 22-inch displays.

Apple, ASUS cut notebooks
Both Apple and ASUS have dramtically cut their notebook production going into the fourth quarter of the year, says the Commercial Times. The Chinese-language paper reports that the companies have slashed outsourcing by 20 to 30 percent, affecting Quanta Computer -- a Taiwanese company thought the be the main builder of unibody MacBooks -- and Pegatron Technology, which handles production for ASUS. ASUS has suggested that its fourth-quarter shipments will be limited to 1.7 million notebooks, preventing it from reaching its 2008 goal of 6 million.

Quanta MacBook Exclusive
Apple's supplier has not only been named for its new MacBooks but considers the American company a significant client, industry contacts claim today. Well-known southeast Asian supplier Quanta is said to be Apple's sole supplier in 2009 and already considers the Mac producer a crucial component of its sales, with a full fifth of its 2008 shipments alone going to MacBooks. The exact number of shipments to Apple specifically hasn't been set, though its portables are said to be ensuring "strong" shipments of between 38 to 40 million portables to all vendors.

Quanta, LG settle lawsuits
The long-standing legal disagreement between LG Electronics and Quanta Computer Inc. has been settled, with Quanta agreeing to pay LG royalties for use of its patented computer technology, LG announced on Tuesday. The two companies entered into a settlement and license agreement, putting an end to two pending lawsuits over Taiwan-based Quanta using four of LG’s US patents without permission pertaining to DVD readers in notebook computers.

New MB Pro Case Spotted
Apple's next-generation MacBook Pro may have had its first glimpse today, says the Taiwan-area site Apple.pro. The report claims to have a photo of the new notebook's casing in prototype form as well as additional details, including items not pictured in the leak. The design appears to be more tapered like that of the MacBook Air and doesn't immediately reveal a backlit Apple logo, although this is most likely due to the incomplete nature of the case.

Apple receiving iPhones?
One of Apple's principal manufacturers is shipping large quantities of an unknown item in advance of the former's WWDC conference on June 9th, Forbes suggests. The magazine notes that in May, Quanta Computer began shipments of a number of unidentified packages, through a port in Oakland, California and a distribution center in Fremont. More importantly, according to Forbes, a substantial amount of packages left the center Wednesday night, with as many as four trucks arriving for pickup during a single 20-minute span.

A technology partnership between Quanta and ooVoo will produce the first plug-and-play, real-time, high-definition video chat and messaging system, the two companies announced Monday. The companies, in response to the continuing growth in HDTV sales and popularity of chat programs, plan to create a product that will easily turn a laptop computer, HDTV or desktop PC into a high-definition chat screen. Quanta Research Institute, a research center of Quanta Computer Inc., the world’s largest laptop maker, would develop the hardware, while ooVoo, a provider of real-time video communication over the Internet, would work on the interface and related software.

Dell Smartphone Imminent
Dell is near the end of developing its return to the handheld market through a smartphone, according to a hint in the latest issue of Forbes. Expanding on a leak from earlier this year, the Texas PC maker is allegedly coordinating the production of a phone with the Taiwanese manufacturing firm Quanta and is drawing on the expertise of recently added executive Ron Garriques, who previously headed the mobile division at Motorola before he jumped to Dell early this year. The new phone will focus heavily on music and video playback as well as Internet access, although the report is unclear as to whether the computer builder is customizing the interface or using off-the-shelf software.
