Mac Pro may get remake for rackmounting
Apple may be on the verge of a long-expected revamp of the Mac Pro that could potentially assuage fears following the end of the Xserve. A rumor Thursday had the system narrower, going from over eight inches to five, while also becoming shorter at 19 inches. The layout as described by 9to5 might help it fit into a 3U rackmount, three times bigger than the Xserve's 1U but also capable of working as a regular desktop.

Microsoft hires for Xbox 360 sequel
Microsoft showed the first signs of getting ready for the Xbox 360's eventual replacement with a new set of jobs all posted on Friday and discovered late Monday. Listings for VLSI graphics and performance architects would have new recruits work on "next generation console architectures" and targeting for a particular level of performance. Other listings include an AV hardware architect, also working on new hardware, and a design verification engineer that would greenlight a new console at individual stages.

Backward compatible with legacy SATA devices
CalDigit, a firm who make storage solutions for the video and content-creation industries, have announced an upgrade to the Fasta-2e eSATA card that supports the latest SATA 6G technology, raising speeds up to six gigabits per second (6Gbps), a doubling of its previous speed limit. The upgraded card works with both G5 Power Macs (from late 2005 onwards) and Intel Mac Pros.

MCE 8x Blu-ray drives
MCE is now shipping its 8X Blu-ray Recordable Drive, which supports burning to Blu-ray, DVD and CD media. The burner writes to BD-R media on systems with Mac OS 10.5.2 and higher, and using Roxio's Toast 10 software, supports burning HD content that can be viewed on dedicated Blu-ray movie players. It is designed for use in Mac Pro and Power Mac systems, with one version being designed specifically for the 2009 Mac Pro. An external model supports both USB 2.0 and eSATA connections.
