A joint venture led by Gordon Brothers Brands and Hilco Consumer Capital, along with private equity fund Knight's Bridge Capital Partners and other investors, was approved by a Minnesota Federal Bankruptcy court to acquire all assets of the Polaroid brand. In a Thursday announcement from the joint venture, which also recently purchased The Sharper Image, Linens 'N Things and Bombay, the companies promise to develop a full-scale global licensing and marketing strategy for wholesale, direct-to-retail and e-commerce business to make Polaroid competitive again. After teasing the device at CES, Dell today launched its Wasabi PZ310 printer. The handheld, 7-ounce design is a companion to digital cameras that support PictBridge over USB as well as most Bluetooth-equipped devices, letting users print away from home. Dell uses a relatively new ZINK (zero-ink) technology borrowed from Polaroid that relies on a layer in the paper itself to print an image without having to use either an inkjet tank or a laser toner cartridge. At CES on Thursday, Polaroid officially introduced the PoGo instant digital camera that prints its own images. The camera effectively integrates the PoGo printer out in stores since the summer and introduced at last year’s CES to produce the images. Interestingly, Polaroid did not release the megapixel count of the camera, nor is it visible anywhere on the body – a definitive break from the norm. Otherwise, users get a 3-inch LCD screen and a 4x digital zoom. Onboard storage is limited to 16MB, but is expandable via SD cards. [full story]

Polaroid recently announced it will launch its PoGo portable photo printer later on this summer. First seen at CES 2008, the printer, whose name is short for Polaroid-on-the-go according to Polaroid, achieves its compact 4.7- by 2.8- by 0.9-inch size by not requiring any ink cartridges. Instead, it uses Zero Ink technology and ZINK Photo Paper as its medium. [full story]

Polaroid launched a new basic digital camera on Friday, the i535, which is aimed at introducing people to digital photography. The i535 boasts a 5-megapixel CMOS sensor, and 3X optical zoom as well as a fixed 2.36-inch display. The i535BB sports 32MB of internal memory, while an SD/HC card slot allows for memory expansion. Video can be recorded in a maximum resolution of 640x480 pixels in motion JPEG format. A carrying case and flexible mini tripod are included, delivering a relatively complete package for beginners.
