Keep an eye on the version number up there in headline, would you? Let us know if it ticks over to 6.0.5 while we're talking. For while this official app for the image saving-and-sharing service has always been regularly updated, lately it's been pumping out versions faster than we can keep up with. Right now we think the very newest edition is Pinterest 6.0.4, or at least it is on the iPhone and iPad.
Social media aggregator Pinterest is rolling out a new app discovery service in conjunction with Apple. The new service, called "App Pins" allows users to share apps that they like with other users of the service, with the app downloading directly to a user's iPhone without leaving the Pinterest app, thus avoiding going through iTunes or the App Store app.
Pinterest has added the ability to message other users to its service for the first time. An extension from last year's pin-sharing feature, Pocket-Lint notes the social network's mobile apps include the option to send messages back in responses to pins, including support for messaging multiple followers in the same thread, with the site suggesting it could be useful for planning events or projects with others.
Facebook has announced that it has added downloadable anti-malware software to its abuse detection and prevention systems. Provided in conjunction with F-Secure and Trend Micro, Facebook's new service is aimed at Windows users with infected devices. A pop-up notification appears upon signing into Facebook on an infected device; the app sends scan notifications within Facebook, and when the scanning is completed, the software uninstalls.
Pop, a visual messaging app for iOS, has been released, offering users the ability to create photo and video combinations to relay a message. Each image-based message is called a "Pop," and upon receipt users press down on the first image to reveal secondary content. The format lends itself to a two-part structure that works well for relaying jokes or surprises, and is conducive to ongoing chatting. Users can share a "Pop" with via the Pop social feed and comment, or build off of, any shared "Pop." Available for devices running iOS 7 or later, Pop is free to download.
Despite Google's efforts to integrate its "social layer" across all of its services, Google+ trails every other major social networking platform. A new report out from Gigya pegs Google+ at only a two percent share of social sharing, behind even LinkedIn, which holds a three percent share. The social platform is in fifth place among the major social outlets.
Amazon has signed a deal with NBCUniversal to add the previous seasons of five shows exclusively to its Prime Instant Video Roster. Grimm, Suits, Covert Affairs, Hannibal, and Defiance will be available on the streaming service over the course of this year and 2014. A number of other shows, including Smash, Alphas, and Warehouse 13, will also appear on the service, though under a non-exclusive distribution deal.
Pinterest has made some adjustments to its design and functionality, only a month after the social network revealed its new look. A number of items dropped from the site have been brought back after users provided feedback, with the team also adding improvements to notifications, search, and alerts relating to new pins being added to the home feed.
Users of Microsoft's Bing will now have access features integrating the search engine with popular image-sharing service Pinterest. Microsoft tipped the new feature in a post to the Bing Search Blog last week, noting that the ability to share to Pinterest flowed out of previous meetings the company had had with lifestyle and design bloggers at Bing headquarters last fall.
In a post on its blog, customer support outsourcing firm Zendesk has reported that a hacker had penetrated its systems, and had purloined data from its customers, including Tumblr, Twitter, and Pinterest. Zendesk officials believe that the attacker was able to download email addresses and subject lines from support mails sent to its clients.
