Chip manufacturer AMD has launched a trio of new eight-core FX processors, based on the older Piledriver architecture. Released today are the FX-8370 and FX-8370E which peak at 4.3GHz, as well as the 4GHz FX-8320E. All three chips buck industry trends and don't have an onboard graphical processing unit.
AMD has unveiled what it calls the world's first commercially available 5GHz CPU processor at the E3 gaming show. The FX-9590, an eight-core chip using the 'Piledriver' architecture that reaches 5GHz in turbo mode, is accompanied by the FX-9370, which also has eight cores and the same architecture, but is clocked at the slightly slower speed of 4.7GHz.
AMD has launched its new line of Opteron processors for servers. The Opteron 6300 Series have a claimed performance up to 24-percent higher than the Opteron 6200 processors that it replaces, and by using AMD's new Piledriver core, aims to lower the consumption of power, leading to cooler and cheaper servers.
Computer chipmaker AMD will turn to Cyclos Semiconductor for its resonant clock mesh technology in its upcoming Piledriver-based chips. They will replace the Bulldozer-core chips introduced in the fall of 2011. The new technology will reduce the chip's clock distribution power.
Computer chipmaker AMD took the opportunity at its yearly Financial Analyst Day to show off upcoming products for 2012 and 2013. They include CPUs and APUs (combined CPU and graphics) for ultrathin notebooks, tablets, all-in-ones, desktops, and servers, with most focusing on lower power use. Some are also designed with the developing world in mind and accessing the cloud.
Leaked AMD mobile platform roadmaps from German forum board 3D Center reveal that the Llano chip replacement, Trinity, is due to begin shipping in the winter of 2012, among other tidbits. There will be four specific models of the chip offered, though no specifics are available yet. A Bulldozer-based Piledriver core will be the basis, which will also underpin the company's upcoming AMD FX-series of processors.
