The Philadelphia police department has been caught disguising a van equipped with sophisticated surveillance technology as a Google Streetview van, reports Motherboard. Instead of the regular cameras fitted to a Google Streetview vehicle, the surveillance vehicle was fitted with ALPR gear that uses infrared cameras to identify and process multiple license plates simultaneously, and almost instantaneously. When contacted about the van, the department disavowed the method that had been used to disguise the vehicle, stating that it had not been formally authorized by senior management, and an internal investigation has been initiated.
Sony has launched its PlayStation-based Internet television service, just as the company hinted last week. PlayStation Vue has gone live in Chicago, New York City, and Philadelphia, with subscribers able to watch live channels and on-demand shows from their PlayStation game consoles, without requiring an accompanying cable or satellite subscription.
Verizon Wireless is starting to offer customers that order online the option to receive their devices the same day. The delivery scheme, which rolls out in Philadelphia today, will see customers able to place an order through the website by 10am and have the in-stock item delivered to the customer's home by 7pm that day.
Broadcaster ABC is said to be updating its iOS app to offer live streams of shows from local ABC stations later this week. New options for a "Live" button in the Watch ABC app for iPhone and iPad will mark it as the first major US broadcaster that provides live streams of its channels to app users, with the first markets to gain the service being New York and Philadelphia.
Apple has decided on a location for its first Apple Store in Philadelphia, a claims a MacNN source connected to the planning of the project. The company has allegedly signed a lease to take over the location of the former Brasserie Perrier restaurant, situated at 1619 Walnut Street. The surrounding portion of Walnut is said to be a high-end shopping and eating district, ideally suited to Apple's strict aesthetics.
