Apple SEC filing shows huge bonus payouts

Apple on Friday sent filings to the SEC that showed one of the larger bonus payouts to its senior vice presidents in recent memory. iOS head Scott Forstall, Hardware Engineering's Bob Mansfield, CFO Peter Oppenheimer, Worldwide Product Marketing lead Phil Schiller, general legal counsel Bruce Sewell, and operations head Jeff Williams all received share awards of 150,000 shares each. At current market values of about $400 per share, each will have made $60 million if they cashed in the same day.

During the course of today's WWDC 2011 keynote, Apple executives elaborated on a number of business milestones the company has achieved. The Mac App Store, for instance, is now claimed to be main channel for buying computer software, ahead of Best Buy, Walmart and Office Depot. The ranking does not reflect the actual popularity of Mac software versus Windows titles, the latter of which are often bought directly from publishers and developers, or through services like Steam.

Google engineering VP Vic Gundotra and Apple marketing VP Phil Schiller came into intense conflict over Google Maps in 2008, according to sources cited by Bloomberg and 9to5Mac. A Bloomberg article remarks that as Android first became a threat to the iPhone, Apple began resisting Google claims to location data accumulated whenever an iPhone owner uses Google Maps. Negotiations became so hot, two sources say, that the CEOs of Apple and Google had to step in and resolve the situation.

Financial publication Fast Company has published a new ranking of possible replacements for Apple CEO Steve Jobs. The magazine notes that even if Jobs does return from his current medical leave, the company will eventually have to find a replacement. The top potential candidate is argued to be Apple's senior VP of iPhone software, Scott Forstall. He is "young, possesses the right kind of technical knowledge and dynamism, and has become an increasingly important figure in key Apple product decisions," according to the magazine.

Apple's VP of worldwide product marketing, Phil Schiller, once came into conflict with Google while visiting the latter's offices several years ago, a source claims. The executive is said to have been at the building for a meeting, and as he entered, he was asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement common amongst Silicon Valley businesses. Schiller is then alleged to have made a "big deal" out of refusing, according to Silicon Alley Insider, insisting that he would either attend the meeting or sign the NDA, but not do both.

A purge of books has taken place at the App Store following accusations of illegal activity. Apple has removed dozens of titles belonging to "mycompany," really developer Thuat Nguyen, who in recent days came to virtually control the top paid books category. At one point 40 out of the 50 top books were attributed to Nguyen, despite the fact that they were mostly non-localized Japanese comics, submitted within a space of two days and likely violating copyright. Many of these were given Vietnamese names, and priced at $5 apiece.

Individuals claim tens of millions in profit

Several Apple executives have become even richer after a stock selloff on Thursday, Fortune reports. Over a million restricted Apple shares became fully vested on Wednesday, and the next morning, four executives sold most of them under a Rule 10b5-1 trading plan. COO Tim Cook is noted to have profited most, having sold 300,000 shares at prices ranging from $226.90 to $230.70; the shares were originally worth $72.01 apiece. Cook's total haul is noted to have been $68.8 million, although $32 million was diverted to taxes.
