Amazon quietly increases storage in new Kindle Paperwhite model

Listing added for new version, reportedly increased memory from 2 to 4 GB

It appears that Amazon recently began directing consumers looking for a Kindle Paperwhite to a new version of the popular e-reader. The listing modification had occurred with what appeared to be no changes in the e-reader. As it turns out, a minor change did take place in the amount of storage that is included in the unit.

Second-generation Kindle Paperwhite features reach first generation

Amazon has updated the software for the first generation of the Kindle Paperwhite, bringing it in line with features already available to the newer model. The free update, available both as a wireless download or a manual transfer over USB, introduces the Goodreads community rating and note sharing scheme to the e-reader, among other new additions to the device.

Amazon has made a large push in Australia for its Kindle tablet line. The retailer has launched its Kindle Fire HD and Kindle Fire HDX tablets in the country, coming shortly after the Kindle Paperwhite became available in stores, and is accompanied by a regional version of the Kindle Store, with Kindle Direct Publishing also opening up in the territory.

Reader offers new display, faster processor

Amazon has formally introduced its new Paperwhite e-book reader, after the device was listed and quickly pulled from the company's inventory earlier today. Customers can place preorders for the basic model, which costs $119 with a September 30 shipping estimate, while the 3G edition jumps to $189 with expected availability in early November.

Amazon appears to have accidentally listed its next-generation Paperwhite reader ahead of its formal announcement. A product page, which was spotted by Engadget and subsequently removed, notes that the device integrates a new display with higher contrast and improved reflectivity, along with a new lighting system to enhance readability in low-light environments.
