Penguin's recent decision to pull its e-books and digital audiobooks from libraries is because it didn't have permission to distribute the borrowed books by forwarding users to Amazon, INFOdocket said. OverDrive only had relationships in place with publishers, who can store and serve library end users' e-books. It doesn't have the authority to send users to Amazon or any other retailer to actually check out the book, the report continues.
Amazon has taken another step toward establishing the Kindle Lending Library. Announced in April, the system appears to have moved to beta testing at the Seattle Public Library and King County Public Library in Washington. The service is provided by OverDrive, which has agreements to manage ebook lending with 11,000 libraries in the US.
Amazon on Wednesday announced users of its Kindle e-book reader and those with the Kindle app on other devices will now get the ability to borrow Kindle books from more than 11,000 libraries in the US. Called simply Kindle Library Lending, the feature will arrive later this year. It will allow for Whispersyncing of notes, highlighting pages, and marking the last page read, even for titles that were returned but lent out once again.
Sprint took a second turn at its mainstay pocketable 4G router on Thursday with the Overdrive Pro. The 3G and 4G hybrid hotspot now supports as many as eight devices on WiMAX, up from five. Speed has improved as well; the Sierra Wireless-made hardware now starts up or shuts down about 35 percent faster.
Computer builder Overdrive PC has announced a new collection of custom-built systems. The machines use a process the company dubs "HyperClocking," a means of overclocking processors while retaining safe power levels; the systems are however divided between a variety of different price levels, beginning with the $1,500+ SmallBlock gaming PCs. These use at least Core 2 Duo E8400s clocked at 3GHz, and 512MB GeForce 9800 GTX cards.
