Microsoft's OneApp project introduced about a year ago may not take off the ground, following in the footsteps of the Kin handsets. OneApp, which would see feature phones receiving an app store and running these apps in markets that include developing countries, was tested in South Africa and in other markets but no future plans were announced for it. According to a Thursday CNET report, Microsoft said it remains "excited about the potential of the OneApp technology and [will] continue to evolve its strategy."
Microsoft debunked some claims of a unified app store for smartphones by launching OneApp on Monday. The software is aimed at bringing relatively complex Internet apps like Facebook, Twitter and Windows Live Messenger to regular, feature-limited phones. It pools all of these into the namesake single app and keeps the footprint down to just 150K while only loading both the local and cloud-based data that's actually needed.
Microsoft has quietly filed for a trademark that may allude to a unified app store for both Zunes and Windows Mobile phones. The filing for the name "OneApp" would cover not just an app download store for cellphones and media players but would also address a developer kit for the same platform. Among the apps suggested possible through the service would include games, media playback, messaging and mobile payments.
