Gowalla apps get social guides, new features

Check-in service Gowalla has announced on Thursday the release of new iPhone (App Store) and Android (Market) apps that include a feature called Social Guides. They include places friends recommend, advice from experts and the best of what's local in particular cities, parks and other regions. The launch covers 60 cities and shows off photos, highlights and experiences from friends and experts.

Experts raise antitrust concerns

The Online Publishers Association is taking a critical stance toward Apple's new in-app subscription policies, according to a representative. The group includes several major publishers, namely Bloomberg, Forbes, Hearst, Time, Conde Nast and National Geographic. Its concern, claims association publisher Pam Horan, is the flexibility to serve customers.

National Geographic digitizes 120 years of issues

National Geographic has released its entire magazine collection, or 120 years' worth, all on a 160GB hard drive. The Complete National Geographic on the hard drive includes the maps, stories and high-resolution photos found in the print magazine. All of this content only takes up 60GB of the space on the hard drive, leaving room for other documents or content.

Duet dual-SIM handset

National Geographic has teamed up with Cellular Abroad to offer one of the few official dual-SIM handsets inthe US with the Duet D888, made by Beyond E-Tech. The tri-band GSM phone ships with a Cellular Abroad international SIM card and has a slot for a second SIM card chosen by the user. This effectively allows users to make and receive calls from and to two separate numbers, and allow them to retain the same handset when traveling abroad while using a local network and not incur roaming charges.
