Samsung had more than its Series 9 notebook in store for its New York City event Wednesday as it put out three new portables targeted at pro users. The Series 2, 4, and 6 all get special treatment with a more durable, spill-resistant shell and metal hinges, as well as a long three-year warranty and phone support in the US for detailed troubleshooting. The Series 4 and 6 go a step further with fingerprint readers, a trust module, and (on the 6) a magnesium alloy shell that reportedly improves its longevity again.
Dell this morning undertook a sweeping remake of its pro PCs, headlined by its Latitude notebooks. The new designs are both more modern, with real aluminum and magnesium instead of plastic, but also designed to take much more real-world abuse. The frame is about 112 percent more durable, including a break-resistant barrel hinge rare on Dell notebooks, and has a unique single access door that lets users replace virtually anything if parts are available.
Lenovo marked two milestones today, starting with a unique upgrade to the ThinkPad T series. The T410, T410s and T510 are the first known business notebooks to use NVIDIA's Optimus graphics switching and can switch to or from their dedicated NVS 3100M video and Intel's integrated chipset. The option of switching to Intel's slower but more miserly video when on battery gives them as much as a third more battery life, or about an hour of extra time.
