Apple has quietly updated Germany Apple TVs with access to the official NHL and Vevo apps, reports say. The Vevo app a relatively recent addition to the Apple TV platform, having debuted in the US in August. The NHL app, though, dates back to 2011, and has already reached a number of other countries, making its German introduction unusually late.
Microsoft has added an app that covers hockey matches to Xbox Live, joining existing sporting apps from ESPN, the NBA and others. The NHL GameCenter service will provide subscribers the option to watch hockey live and on-demand in HD, as well as the ability to personalize the service for statistic tracking, and a number of on-demand classic games from the history of the sport.
Roku on Monday kicked off its Canadian launch. The country will get two higher-end models in the lineup, the Roku 2 XD and Roku 2 XS, both of which can handle 1080p video; the XS bundles in the Wii-like motion remote and includes both Ethernet and USB for wired access and local content. Canadians get much of the same content, including Netflix, Rdio music, and major sports like the MLB and NHL, although US-specific services like Hulu Plus are out of contention.
SiriusXM has added coverage of NHL games to its lineup of streamed Internet content. Apple was expected to post an Apple TV update along with iOS 5 on Tuesday, but most expected a dry update to bring it in line with iOS 5 features like AirPlay mirroring. Roku made one of its biggest pushes into retail on Wednesday and landed a key deal with Best Buy. The big-box stores will carry the mid-range Roku XD both in retail and online. The move represents the first time one of the company's networked media hubs is available at stores across the US without a forced rebranding.
The Apple TV other unsupported platforms may get NFL Sunday Ticket in what could be a major coup. A leaked DirecTV research survey has suggested that those who subscribed to the Internet version of the live sports service could watch on an "Apple TV, Boxee or Roku player," adding dedicated media hubs that haven't had service at all before. Blu-ray players, game consoles and direct TV connections were likewise mentioned in Engadget's tip.
Boxee at its Brooklyn launch event revealed that the Boxee Box and the software platform would be getting a handful of key launch partners. Hulu Plus is the highlight and will see Boxee offer the $10 monthly streaming service on its media hub. The company didn't say if the free web version will be blocked outright, but it said free wouldn't be an option and promised a "real" Hulu designed for TV rather than just the browser.
The NHL launched a three-prong effort to get live games on to digital media hubs by offering its GameCenter Live broadcasts on multiple new platforms. Boxee's Mac and Windows apps, the Boxee Box, the PS3 and Roku players now have access to live, streaming hockey games, on-demand versions for 48 hours later and the roughly 500 full games and other condensed games in the league's archive. The game schedules, news and stats are also available.
